Hi. I can't PM people without at least 5 posts, so I thought a self intro would be a good start. I'm Steve, 37, from Northeast TN (USA). Back when I was a teenager and still lived with my parents, I bought a JBL 12" 120-watt subwoofer, a floor demo on closeout from Circuit City. I still use it. When I was younger, I played a bass tester CD, and I swear I could hear resonance down to 16Hz. Below that and it just sounded like machine gun fire. Anyway, I see no reason to upgrade that.

When I was a newlywed, I bought an RCA HTIB, also a display demo closeout, but from Radio Shack this time. Eventually, dialog reproduction pissed me off to the point that I upgraded my center channel to an RCA 65831, a warm and well-spoken box with dual 5" honeycomb fiberglass drivers and a 3x3.5" Linaeum tweeter; a combo that has taken all the abuse I could throw at it and still sound natural at any volume. That was a display demo closeout.

For the past few months my receiver had developed a noisy fan and occasional spontaneous shut off problem. I had been lamenting the lack of HDMI ports and video upscaling for quite a while, so I decided to give the receiver away and pay it forward, while at the same time upgrading myself to a Marantz SR6008 (a refurb from accessories4less). Hooray, tax refund! Here's a brief review of the Marantz: I love it. If I had to choose between giving up either my wife or my new receiver... well, I'd give up my receiver, but I wouldn't be happy about it at all.

At the same time as I was shopping for a receiver, I started noticing things about the color of my sound that hadn't really bothered me before -- mostly the tinny nature of the HTIB satellites I've still been using. So rather than waste the talents of such an excellent receiver on such crappy speakers, my latest quest has been to find a new pair of bookshelves to use as mains. My trustworthy sub already more than covers any gains that might be had from towers, plus space is a major concern. I'll post a picture or two soon. That ought to be good for another post in my 5 post goal, right? Bahaha!

I just demoed a pair of JBL ES20 bookshelfs from Amazon. They failed the audition, so I sent them back. After reading review after review after opinion after sales pitch, I've decided that the sound I want is going to cost a little more money. At the same time, as you can see above, I consider myself a failure if I ever pay full price for something.

So I've got my eye on a couple of choices: a pair of Wharfedale Jade 1 in the classifieds here, and... dare I say it? A pair of closeouts: MB Quart VS05B. Both appear to be very well reviewed, and I'm leaning toward the MB Quarts. (I've had MB Quart speakers in my car and absofreakinglutely loved them. They sounded like butter.) But I either have to wait for pay day, or for someone to whom I've loaned money to pay some back.

Anyway, that's my story. It didn't have any sort of moral. No real ending, not much of a beginning to speak of, and the middle was crap. *shrug* Hi.

Welcome to the disease :)

Wow, you have a JBL sub that didn't go up in smoke even with 16Hz tones?

It was made last century when speakers were quality built, and when you could fix your car with panty hose and duct tape. The good ol' days. :>

Awesome intro, Steve - welcome!
Thanks Adam! What a great dog in your sig. Would you consider trading my receiver for your dog?

Those older JBLs were notorious for that though. Horror story notorious, so it is good that it wasn't ALL of them.

You demoed the wrong JBL speakers - JBL did good with the Studio 5 series.

I remember the RadioShack/Optimus/RCA stuff, you are talking about.:)

Fondly? Well, in any case i'm well satisfied with my center channel, but the htib satellites have got to go -- at least the fronts for now, anyway.

One of my co-workers let me borrow a pair of mid-90's KLH AV-1001 5.25" bookshelfs thank goodness. I can't go back to satellites up front any more.

These KLHs had some funky grilles with like shag carpet on them or something. I hated them until I removed the grilles. Now they sound pretty good, although they still has a flavor in the male vocal range -- a nasal timbre about the same pitch as rapping my knuckles on the baffle; and they have unacceptably weak mid-bass. They're still better than my satellites though.

I'm so critical now. I think I have a disease, as j_garcia suggests.

It's quite easy to get used to good stuff :)
Also on low budget AND a good taste, DIY might be not a bad idea if you have some skills and a garage

I'd love to try building my own cabinets out of mdf and loading them with nice car audio components and polyfil. My wife won't let me have power tools that cut though. A neighbor of her parents chopped off a finger or something, and she's scared I'll do the same. She says she's too fond of my fingers.

You could get pre-cut folded boxes and just glue them.. :) No need for power tools or cutting finger off

Skip the car audio speakers - get some box speaker drivers from Ebay
Also, some cheap drivers from Parts Express.

Also, there can be better dampening than polyfill - it depends on what
will work best.

Seriously, I have no life.

Welcome :)
I wonder if any of your wife's friends or relatives passed away in a car related accident? Both of you would be walking everywhere ;)

Yeah, I saw that too. Actually, just for giggles, I decided to piece together components for a set of kickass bookshelf speakers -- 0.5 cu. ft. cabinets, 6-1/2" drivers, super tweets, and even a pair of passive radiators. By the time I added crossovers and binding post cups, my cart was up to $475; and I'd still need to buy appropriate-sized hole saws elsewhere (or a router + circle guide, whichever ended up cheaper).

Then I figured I ought to re-visit the kit idea, going with the non-curved cabinet and still adding a passive radiator on the side of each; but there's nowhere in the description that indicates whether the kit employs a 5.25" driver, a 6.5", resonant frequency, or really any info at all that might help predict whether a passive radiator could even be driven...

Not that the brand-name speakers I mentioned on page 1 have passive radiators, but if I'mma DIY, I want what I want... You know?

Anyway, the DIY idea is a great idea, sounds like a lot of fun, and would be a great value when compared to similar speakers at retail. But the savings against the bargains I found aren't significant enough to warrant the effort.

If I weren't a family man and could devote uninterrupted time to the project, I might feel differently, though.

Hey, thank you guys for getting me > 5 posts! :) I just realized.

This one is complete - all you have to do, is hook it up.

Wanna see my stuff?

Not sure whether you can see the TV very clearly, but that's a 67" Samsung DLP. On the stands are my co-worker's KLH AV-1001s. Below the TV is my HTPC to the left, then my Ubuntu server, Comcast DVR, Wii, my Marantz SR6008, and my RCA center channel. Not pictured, I'm sitting on one of four Berkline motorized home theater seats, each with an Aura Bass Shaker Pro mounted underneath, driven by an AudioSource AMP-100. Behind me are two of those RCA satellites mounted on the wall, and my JBL sub facing the corner.

It's not much, but it's mine. :)
