I'm looking to upgrade my pioneer bfd51. I know all about oppos quality video and audio but can't pull myself to spend that much. What would be the next best brand? Marantz, NAD, dennon?

Pretty much all my equipment is b stock and that's how I afford this ridiculous hobby. I wish I could find some b stock oppos.

thanks
Michael:)

Why do you want to upgrade your Pioneer BD player? (And do you mean that you have the Pioneer BDP-51-FD?) If it works fine, there is no need to replace it for watching BDs.

I have bad news for you. Very likely, the second and third best BD players cost more than an Oppo. So you should either go Oppo or go cheap. For standard BD viewing, it will likely not matter much, as long as the player is reliable. For other things (e.g., upconverting DVD, playing SACD, DVD-Audio, region free issues), you might want to spend the extra for an Oppo.

My advice is, keep the Pioneer as long as it does everything you need, and save your money for now. It is only if it does not do what you need it to do that you should replace it. Unless, of course, you like throwing away money, which many people seem to enjoy doing. I have found people complaining when I advise someone to now bother with an upgrade, as it is their money to blow. Of course, I do not deny that it is their money to blow, and do not force anyone to do anything. I am only giving advice, and others may take it or leave it, as it pleases them. It does not hurt me if other people waste their money on things that do nothing for them. But some people do not like it when someone suggests that someone else not waste money.

It has an awful handshake issue with my marantz sr 7001. Also sony discs have some issues. I bought it bstock for 240.00. If I remember correctly its msrp was 799? It had good reviews at the time.

Who cares who second place is? :) j/k Isn't the 51FD pretty old at this point?

Unless you are after a significant audio improvement for the DACs, you won't get a massive improvement in video IMO. Look for a used Oppo. They usually aren't that hard to find, especially when the new models come out.

IMO, Denon would be one of the next best choices in that category. Honestly, I have no complaints about my previous few Panasonic players. The current one lacks analog audio outs though, so it might not be a good choice - on the plus side, it was only $60 new.

I'm using a musical fidelity v90 dac soi don't really need to improve that. Its so sluggish and the load time is horendous. The real issue is it not working well when going through the marantz. And I only have two hdmi inputs on the tv. I have seen some refurbs on oppos website but they were still pricey. I'll look at the dennons on accesories4less.Thanks!

My Sony BDP-BX59 works quite well with my Marantz AVPs, first the 7005 now the 8801, no hand shaking issues at all. Costco had the newer model BX51 going for $89 for a while, that's in Canada so in the US it may even be cheaper. If your issue is just disc compatibility, speed and video quality there is no point spending more than $100. A Sony or Panasonic at that price point will serve you well. I agree with John, your Pioneer is just old and outdated otherwise in terms of audio and video quality IMO it should be as good as the Oppo 103 or even the 105 if you are only playing BR and DVD discs. I have the lower rank Pioneer BDP-320 so I am speaking from experience.

I was happy with my BDP-65 and it worked great. Had it not been stolen, I wouldn't have bought the BDP-79.

Sorry to bring up a sore subject but how did your insurance company handle the theft? Assumeing you had ins..how did they determine the value and how much to reinburse?

They basically compared the price of the model new, then factor in depreciation and replacement cost and give you a price. Some items I got less than replacement cost and others I got slightly better. So all in all, it ended up being pretty even, though I still got back less than they estimated the total loss at and some personal things you can't really replace no matter how much they pay you.
