It's been insanely cold down here. We have been in the teens several times and we don't have the clothes to really handle that sort of weather like they do up north. A heated steering wheel sounds like heaven. The Super Bowl picked the wrong winter to go up north IMO.
I was in the DFW area last week. It was 70 degrees on Monday. Great to work on the dock in the warehouse. Had the doors open, sun and breeze pouring in...really nice in January. Then it turned cold. Everyone was complaining so I pointed out that at 50 degrees, it was shorts weather back home up north. They just looked at me like I was crazy. But then, they can handle the 98 degrees and humid. I can't.

I'll see if I can post pictures. The pictures I have don't make it seem that bad. But looking at the front facia, left and right quarter panels, hood damage, suspension parts for left & right, steering parts, new wheels & tires for the front both sides, possible damage to the transmission, damage to the suspension mounts, etc. I will probably be totaled since it has/had 119,567 miles on it.

But it was paid for. I was going to run it into the ground. Didn't want to pay for anything newer. I'd like one of those new Ram 1500 pickups with the 3.0L diesel...but they aren't making them available in the US yet. Since they can't get them made, they are going to lose a sale. Now I have to find something to buy that works for my needs and gets decent fuel mileage. Ugh...bad timing for that.

It doesn't take much to total new cars these days, years ago I had a fleetwood with 18K miles on the car, basically brand new.. I got a small tap on the right side, banged the doors and rear quarter, bent the wheel popped the tire, ect The rest of the car looked perfect it needed doors, body work a few lights, wheel and tire, and paint. The car was worth $32K and they salvaged it...

They said I could keep it for $900 so I did, I had my cousins body shop fix all the body damage, 2 used doors, changed all 4 rims and tires {cost less than 1 oem wheel}, when they were done you couldn't tell it was ever hit. Total it cost me $1700 for the parts and labor, plus the original 900 and 3 weeks later I had my car back, as good as new, plus a check for $30K.... and I think I got $6800 for scarring, my left arm broke the window and I had a small cut {6 stitches}, there is no scar now... I guess that is what we pay insurance for....

car crash - sm.jpg

Finally got photos sent to a computer that I can upload from. Here is the front end. All ripped off. Front cover and the crap that goes underneath it. Looks like it's on the ground because the left front tire was broken off when I was slammed into the concrete barrier. The right front is smashed in and won't turn. So it looks likes its low to the ground because it is.

Here is the left front tire. You can see the rim was busted right out of there. Considering I was hit in the right front, anyone wanna bet the right front rim is cracked?

Here is how I ended up. Up against the wall, tire missing, suspension damaged, no steering, back end hanging out into the traffic lane.

It is 1 pm on day 9 after the accident and still no word from my insurance company about the status of my car. Repair or totaled? No idea. They use a 3rd party to do the damage estimate and last I heard was from Monday saying they are running behind because of weather. Weather? Or just shear volume cause by the weather?

I don't know about other states, but in SE Wisconsin, most communities have about used up their stock of road salt. So they are mixing it with sand and only using in select locations instead of dousing the road with it. So people will have to just slow down. One section of Highway 20 near Racine had a cor in the ditch every 500 to 1000 feet this morning. Felt like a slalom course zigging around all the stuck cars. Alot of them looked like they were plain going too fast.

It's been a bad winter in the Midwest and East Coast.

Cast rims can be broken more easily, but damn, that's a lot of damage.

The Northeast Is a Mess Because It's Running Out of Salt
You know it's a bad winter when the local news actually reports that two cargo ships carrying 50,000 tons of road salt arrived in port!

I think too many midwest drivers are spoiled by salt use and don't know how to drive in bad conditions. Especially the 4x4 guys. But what do I know? I do know they really don't use salt in Fargo and that's ok.

I agree on the cast rims. But even billet would have been bashed with the hit I took on both sides. Still struggling with trying to figure out what to replace it with. Been a good 6 years since I bought a car. Having everything paid for has been real nice. Also suffering from sticker shock.

Thats a lot of damage, there are laws the insurance companies have to follow, 7 days to tell you if it is a total loss and 30 days to pay, then if its a total loss 30 days to pay you for your sales tax {they only have to pay sales tax if you replace the vehicle}...

Different states are different, but do yourself a favor and if they don't satisfy you with service get Amica, if they are available in your area...

LATEST INSURANCE UPDATE - A big WTF!!!!!!

Seriously, Accident was at 7:45 a.m. on Monday, Jan 27. They were all hot an bothered that I get all of my stuff out of the car so it could be picked up and hauled to the processing center. So the next day in windchills of -27 degrees, I cleaned out the car of everything of mine. Left only the owners manual.

So 10 days later, the car still hasn't been picked up. No evaluation, nothing. Nada, zip, zilch. No word to me. Nothing. Can't due diddly squat. I can wait on a check, as i can cover the money until the check arrives. I don't have the time to sit with my thumb up my a$$ while they do nothing.

WTF!!!

Time for a new insurance company, or a new agent at least. I switched agents a few years back and the new one was able to get me better rates at the SAME COMPANY.

My kid's accident has been going on so long I just got the registration for his car...and the car was crushed over 6 months ago.
