Super Bowl XLVIII (48, for those of you who skipped math class that day)

This is it; last game of the season. A dark day for aficionados of the game or what passes off as the game nowadays. But that’s a different subject for another time. Maybe we can get Roger to come in for a little Q & A to allay our fears later on this year.

On paper this promises to be a good game. No. 1 Defense vs. No. 1 Offense, Old vs. Young. The contrasts couldn’t be starker.

Peyton Manning, who from now on will be referred to as Frankie, as in Frankenstein … really, look at him :D … has had a phenomenal year, even if the offences in today’s NFL have carte blanche, per the “rules”, to go up and down the field at whim. 55 TD passes and 5,477 yards with a 68.3% completion rate this season. Phew! Just the facts, mam, just the facts. A definite first ballot HOF’er, whether he wins tomorrow or not. But … you knew one was coming … but can he do it again? He didn’t play well when the Colts won their last championship and his first. The Colts defense bailed him out. Check it out. He does have a history of coming up short, from his college days till last year’s loss at home to the Ravens, in big games. And that 5-10 record against Tom Terrific & Mr. Happy in between doesn’t exactly speak well for him.

And then we have the Barbarians at the Gate, the Seahawks D. Are we going to witness a brutal mugging of an old man or a perplexed young ogre being paper cut, over and over again, by Frankie, like his performances during the regular season? Will their relative youth at a critical position … yes, I'm talking to you Mr. Wilson … paralyze him like a first time singer in a high school talent show? After all the distractions leading up to the game, will they be overwhelmed once the ref blows his whistle at the start of the game? Will the screech of that whistle induce a form of vertigo or will the callowness of their youth actually inure them to the enormity of it all? The answers to all these questions will be answered at 6:30 tomorrow night.

But I come here to not bury Frankie but to praise him. Denver is favored by 2.5 points, and Vegas is usually spot on in these matters. I’ve made a habit of choosing the underdog over the years but I’ll be singing a different tune for this game. Frankie finally, not only silences his critics … me included … but does it in memorable fashion. Denver 31-17.

One more thing. The weather and the howling from the press. Shut your noise, you!!! After all these years of a company paid vacation to warm weather climes, the press is worried about the “fairness” of it all. Really??? Black liars, one and all. Football is and was meant to be played outdoors, weather be dammed. Do I care that some corporate honcho and his minions are inconvenienced? No. Do I care that we don’t optimal conditions for the game to be played? No. What? During the season it’s OK but now because it’s the Super Bowl, we make the game as sterile as a test tube? Isn't that half-time show enough torture? Football is a game of attrition. Just ask Green Bay Packers fans whether they were happy losing Aaron Rodgers in the middle of the season, just when they started to go on a tear. So stop whining and enjoy the game … and pray for snow. :D Tell me that the Eagles vs. Lions game this year wasn’t one of the most enjoyable games you saw all season. Please, stop the whining.

So, who ‘ya got?

Ponzio, you're probably right (especially about Frankie), but I'm gonna pull for Seattle anyway.

Frankie has for some time been the NFL's designated "fair-haired boy", their public relations money machine, and for that reason alone, I've avoided rooting for him. Despite my prejudice, he has had a truly outstanding season. His age, injury and surgery (not to mention those bolts coming out of the side of his neck) seem to have made him better.

Just the same, when he dominated New England the other week, it may have been an outstanding performance, but it was absolutely boring to watch. That's the other problem I have with Peyton (oops, I mean Frankie), when he plays his game, it's boring football. I don't care how often he hollers Omaha, he plays like a ball hog. In contrast, the Seattle San Francisco game was thrilling.

And I have to wonder how the Denver O line managed to completely prevent the NE pass rush from laying a hand on Frankie. Did the referees permit an unusual amount of holding? The TV coverage never gave us a good look at line play when Denver had the ball, and the TV announcers avoided any talk about that. The number of passes Frankie made, and the rather long time he had to make those passes, in my opinion, makes this a critical part of that game. We'll see how the Seattle pass rush does tomorrow.

This morning, listening to the radio, I heard one interesting tidbit. In past Superbowl games, teams with the NFL's top defense had an overall winning record, and teams with the top offense did not. I forget the won-lost numbers, but it raises hope for Seattle.

It may come down to what the referees (and the NFL) decide to allow the defense to do on the field.

I couldn't agree with you more, especially the "fair-haired boy" comment. I am a longtime standing member of the Frankie bashers club in good standing.

That Denver vs. NE game was bizarre to watch. Unlike the Seattle vs. SF game. Talk about fireworks!

Mr. Happy must’ve been doing shrooms or something. Mush blitzes? Really Bill? I had him as a candidate for Coach of The Year. Outside of Tom Bündchen … well she does make more money … this year’s team was not the ’85 Bears. I’m happy when Mr. Happy is unhappy. :D Tom Terrific was throwing to god knows who in the 2nd half. Weird game.

The refs this year, in the playoffs and a little in the regular season, have been letting the boys play. It’ll be interesting to see how they “officiate” this one. Does Roger make a call and every pitty-pat between a WR and cornerback get scrutinized like the Rape of Nanking? If so, it doesn’t look good for Seattle and their secondary. We’ll see. I just want a good game. :)

Rough start I guess...

WOW 87 yards , guess who just won the superbowl, lol... you don't come back from that with less than 30 minutes of football left...

A rough start is being down 21-7 at halftime. This is way worse. This is just atrocious football by Peyton Manning & the Denver Broncos. It's a group effort.

So, you guys need some tips for next years schedule. :D:D

Yah, they are not doing well, but when you couple that with the seahawks doing well, you have trouble..

I don't think any team has ever came back from -29, they obviously aren't going to say that on the fox commentary, lol... But I think the biggest comeback in nfl history is 28 and during a super bowl is 10... games over..

I am sitting on my couch rite now, my brother and his friend are over and both wanted Denver to win, lol I don't care for either team so its no big deal either way, but I of course would rather watch a game that keeps you on the edge of the seat, this is like watching a slow car wreck... I have 2 friends at the game, texted them a couple times they said they are sitting with a bunch of denver fans, they also don't care for either team, lol... My wife went to UT with Peyton, and said he wasn't very good back then either...

I really thought this was going to be an exciting and close game after all the hype. As a Seahawks fan I couldn't be happier but I can't say I wasn't surprised by the total domination by the Hawks. With a healthy Percy Harvin I can see next year being another great season. GO HAWKS!!!

1+

She was wailing ... in a good way. :)

Queen Latifah on the other hand was a bit droll & uninspired.

And pray tell, who is the Jackie Wilson wanna-be, Bruno Mars, without the associated pipes? Before he came on my daughter tells me that "you're not going to like this guy Dad, he can't sing to save his a$$". Sadly she was painfully right. I accept that not all music will be to my taste generationally but would it be asking too much for a competent or unique singer at such a ballyhooed event? Personally I wish they would get rid of the musical half-time all together. I have yet to be impressed with any of the performances over the years; be it the Stones, McCartney, et all. It's like watching Star Wars and out of nowhere Elmo does a musical number. Huh? Nowadays most of the stadiums have these giant Jumbo-tron screens; why not have NFL Films do a recap of the season with highlights? Just sayin'

Best Commercial: This years crop was so-so. I enjoyed Volkswagen's "get their wings" theme but this stole the show for me.

Yeah...my wife had no idea who he was. My kids didn't care. My wife and I just traded looks during the show. My dog stayed comatose. It was uninspiring to say the least. When the Chilli Peppers came on stage, my oldest ask "What's wrong with him?" I tried to explain that was how they were. I couldn't really explain it.

I think they tried to appeal to two different demographics and failed.

I'm not sure what else to say. I thought the game stunk. I had no dog in the fight so the final outcome wasn't important to me. I just wanted a quality game. Didn't get one. Plus I thought the commercials were fairly uninspiring this year as well. Sigh...now it's gloom until March Madness.
