Logging Into my HTPC

Every time I want to access my HTPC.. I have to go to Network and type in \\:(ip address)

Is there a way I can map this somehow or save the connection so I don't have to do it each time?

It is static. I'm accessing my OpenElec HTPC from my Windows PC. I just have to type in the i.p. address to have it show up in Windows Explorer each time.

Ohh.. I see what you're saying. Have you tried adding a network connection to "my computer"? Is the HTPC always on?

Access it how? Just a share or remote desktop?

If network is setup correctly you can do my network and browse to the computer.

Also right click on the share and map as network drive.

All depends on what you need.

The machine isn't always on. It has a static I.P. though 192.168.1.13

When I browse the network it's not there. I have to click onto Network and type in the address bar \\192.168.1.13 Then it's there. I don't see the option to Map it anywhere.

You should be able to create a shortcut of some kind that will get you where you want. The only thing I have running linux is UnRAID and it shows up just like all my other computers. Not sure if this in an OpenELEC thing or not.

Yeah I'm in uncharted waters here. I'm not a Linux guy at all and with the small OpenElec build, I don't know what the deal is. You would think that all I would have to do is double click my network icon in Windows Explorer and it would show. I see it on my network via the my router software, but have ping it for it to show up on my windows machine.

I'm with jinjuku, still not clear on what you're trying to accomplish.

Mapping the drives will be a problem when you don't have the OpenElec box on before you turn on your computer. Any mapped drives that can't be resolved just won't be mapped. Turning on the box afterwards won't resolve the mappings automatically on your PC.

There are some WoL options (WakeOnLAN) that you might be able to use with a persistent share configured in Windows 7. You've got options, just need to understand what your setup is and what you're trying to accomplish.

You can edit the host file.

C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (there is no file extension)

edit hosts file.png

I'll try to explain it better... My HTPC in in my family room in my cabinet. My Windows PC is in my office across the house. I do all my ripping and downloading on my office computer because it's just a lot more convenient. I then copy the movie over to my HTPC's hard drive. The issue is... my HTPC doesn't always show in my network in windows. I have to manually enter the I.P. address to have it show up at which point I can then access the HTPC folders and what not.

Im just wondering if I can have a permanant way to do that without having to type it in each time.

You could also try mapping the HTPC drive to make things easier.

First, I assume both PCs are connected via Ethernet to the home network?
Second, I would reset the router.
Third, I would leave the Windows Home Network and then rejoin the Home Network one PC at a time.
4th, I would make both PCs' IP static.

I have no clue what OS you use or what you know, but I tested by right clicking on Computer>map network drive. \\192.168.x.x\movies and it worked without issue. That's all you should have to do.

My desktop is Windows 7... the HTPC is OpenElec. When I right click MyComputer, Map Drive is not an option like it should be. It's weird. I also tried modifying the HOST file as noted above. It took a bit because of UAC and all that, but once I was able to do it, it consistently knocked the router out. I'd maintain connection to the router, but the router lost the internet. I remove the line from the HOST file, everything's fine. I triple checked this several times.

At this point... it's not worth wasting anymore of your guys' time. I can just type it in.

I bet you have home or home premium version of windows. That may be why the option isn't there.

Map network drive is available via right click on all flavors since XP.

You don't right click 'My Computer' for map drive. You click the shared directory that you want.

Okay... got it done... If I right-clicked the folder to map... nothing. Right click "computer" I get nothing. I right-clicked Network, just the main title in Windows Explorer, there was Map Network Drive... but nowhere else that it should be. I'm pretty solid in Windows... it's literally not in the places it should be.

Anyway... after right clicking the network icon, I selected Map Drive... put in the I.P., browsed to my main data folder and mapped it.
