My Denons remote has a button on the remote marked "Ext In" that brings these into play.

My remote doesn't have that button "Ext-In" ......... I guess I have to assign it ... I looked at the manual and still can't figure it out.

how to I assign CD input to play "Ext-In" input?

thanks

You can't assign this input normally, it is its OWN input. If your receiver has an OSD, you should be able to use that to switch to the input if you don't have a button on your remote (which if you have the original remote, you should). Note too that this input generally bypasses processing including bass management, so you will need to make sure you have the player's bass management properly configured. The menu system is not very user friendly on the 222ES, but basically it has a pretty comprehensive configuration for bass management.

This thread is painful.

Sorry this is painful for you.
I still don't understand how to get to the option to make the necessary change

I looked up your remotes and it does not appear there is a button on either the zone 1 or 2 remote for that input as you've stated.

Looking in your manual, it appears you need to choose "input mode" and cycle through the settings to select the EXT.IN input on page 83 -> remote control operation.

Your manual is located here:

9.2 A/V Receiver, Surround Sound | AVR-4311CI | Denon

I hope someone with a 4311 and have used the Ex.In would walk you through this step by step but that's unlikely or won't be timely as most 4311 owners would expectedly be using HDMI or Denon Link for SACDs. So you may have to read through Sec.82 through Sec 84.

Once you have had enough fun with your 222ES you may want to try out a $85 or less Sony BDP, play your SACD with the fantastic 4311, experiement with it's XT32/SubEQ/DEQ and enjoying to the superior sound. I am listening to my old $89 Sony BX-59 playing a 5.1 SACD via DSD output to my AV8801 now and it sounds just as good as my other universal players that cost over 10 to 20X more. Just food for thought....

Edit: I like the Denon Link so much that I keep forgetting that it can only be used with Denon players (typically just the higher end models).

No, but clearly it wasn't getting across. I was looking up the remotes and just stumbled on the info and figured reinforcement might be handy :) (Wasn't sure if it was 83 or 84 since the PDF went dual page on me).

All done and works great, thank you

At playback I have it set as "MCH Direct" .... I don't bother to go into "5-Large-SW" or 5-Small-SW" ..... or is MCH Direct not giving me the true 5.1 SACD experience???

I also notice that when I change layer from SACD to CD while music is playing, there is absolutely no difference. As I go back and forward. Song doesn't even stop. There is no audible indicator that something just changed.

If you have setup the 222ES properly, you should be using MCH Direct.

That does not sound correct for selecting the different track types. When I switched between CD/2CH/Multi-channel, the disc would stop and start from the first track of the selected format EVERY time with that player. It cannot do this on the fly because the tracks are physically different. I owned that player for nearly 10 years and I felt it was a pretty solid player.

this is so weird.

I hear 5.1 sound but when in the player i change to 2.1 or change layer SACD to CD, song keeps playing like it did. No difference in sound, no stopping of the song. The only time something happens when I change a setting in the SACD player is when I change from that MCH Direct mode to any other modes like 5-Large+SW.

My set up is...

Receiver is set to Pure Direct
SACD player connected through 6 cables
On receiver it's connected to EXT-IN

Sound seems to be surround but like I said, when I change the settings on SACD player, nothing happens.

You may have to stop the player first, then change your selection and then press play again, in order to have the effect. That's how my Denon player work, maybe the Sony works like that too. No harm trying.
