The cmt 340 seems a good purchase. ... Do you know if I should wait for boxing day or they always stay at the same price? And those speakers will be better then any of the one I put in my original post? Thanks again for your help... its pretty hard to know what to get in speakers with all those brand in stores.. I would still like some other suggestions! The only thing with the cmt 340 is they really dont look good..

Not trying to pick on you - however, your receiver to speaker ratio seems to be off balance - if you had
spent less on a receiver, you would have more budget for speakers. Ascend is still a nice option for you,
and I would opt for them over anything you have listed so far. However, another option is HTD.

Level Three bookshelf and center
HTD Level THREE Bookshelf Speakers

HTD Level THREE Center Channel Speaker

Do you own any speakers or subwoofer at this time?

I know the ascends aren't the prettiest speaker in the world, but that is because they put everything into the sound quality...

For better looking speakers look into wharfedale Diamonds, not sure if there are any dealers out your way... A few of the speakers you are listing are what I would never consider for a "high end" system... If you want something warm that sounds good IMO the ascends are the starting point..

As Z said HTD is also a good option, I have only heard the HTD level 2's and the Level 3 towers, the 2's didnt impress me, they had small drivers and sounded it, the level 3 towers I heard in a budget {$1000, they used the HTD stereo amp} 2ch system and I was impressed with the low end, but I never heard the bookshelfs...

If the cmt 340 are the best option I will buy them.. I just think they look ugly! Right now I have 5.1 precision acoustic hd1 but I am looking for an upgrade. So the cmt 340 for the center channel and the 2 front speakers and I just need to chose wich speakers I will buy for the back (4 of them)

For surrounds I spend as little as possible, they are only effect speakers, fluance has bipoles for $99 and $150, you can get pretty much any mono pole you want, nht superzero 2.0 {may be out of stock by now, they are on sale for $60ea}, or any other decent bookshelf, you can get them from $60 a pair...

I listen to a lot of multichannel music, in which case I vote for better surrounds that are closer in quality to the mains. For that same reason, I generally prefer monopole surrounds as well. For movies, you can get away with spending a bit less and not timbre matching. The Ascend setup I heard used 170SEs as surrounds an I thought it sounded very good.

See we all have different tastes, I personally can not stand to listen to multi channel music, it hurts my soul... I use the 200se's for surrounds and I tried the 170's but with movies the 200s do more than enough and them 170s looked silly hanging from my ceiling, they are quite large... I set up my mothers system with the flunace surrounds {you may remember the thread} and they sound great, but I wouldn't want to use them for multi ch music... If I was going for multi ch music I would use all the same speaker all the way around...

I think the op should start over, I don't know what they sell in canada, but going to do some listening would be a good step... I hate to see him buy the ascends if he can't stand the looks of them, he will never be happy with them if aesthetics are very important. To my they are in my living room and the looks don't bother me, they are just speakers, where my other systems are in rooms where we entertain and looks were more important...

how about this set, I believe they ship for free to canada too... CAMBRIDGE AUDIO S-Series 5.1 Home Theater Speaker Package | Accessories4less

That is a good point about starting over - and you can become distracted if you keep
looking at your speakers.

I also say +1, on the Cambridge Audio set-up

Do not let anyone convince your decision - looks can tend to be important in speaker selection.

Take a look at the Cambridge speakers that were linked - even the S30 bookshelf speaker, is not
a Mickey Mouse - the bass will go down to 60 hz on them.

If not interested - then look for Focal and Monitor Audio in your area.

You have to listen to some GOOD multichannel music then :) I am primarily a stereo listener also, but for really well done multichannel mastering (1812 overture is incredible in multichannel) it really does add that extra dimension.

your receiver to speaker ratio seems to be off balance
This is spot on.

Your speakers and room have a much greater impact on sound than electronics. When talking budget for audio portion of the HT, the frequently quoted guideline is 50-65% speakers while spending minimum possible for everything else including receiver/amp, players, cables, stands, etc. Of course, this doesn't mean you go bottom of barrel for everything but speakers, just that you spend prudently. In the speaker budget, it is recommended that one spend the most on LCR and sub and less on side and surround speakers. Last but not the last, the side and surround speakers need not match the LCR if music is not a property.

If at all possible, stagger your purchases. First get the front L, R, then a sub, then sides and finally center. This way your finances don't get over extended trying to buy everything at once and eventually you end up with spending close to the guideline for speakers vs everything else.

Are you interested in DIY options? This will give you best bang for money.

I have listened to it, my brother plays dark side of the moon and hotel california in surround sound all the time and it is just wrong...

Um ok. At what THD and for how long? Does the X4000 have an identical or verified equivalent amp performance? If not, the number has no bearing here.

Also, the OP is going to use the X4000 in a HT setup, so 2ch performance has no bearing here.
Those numbers are RMS @ 1% THD.

And for HT, not all 5 CH are continuously driven all the time. Besides, the subs will get most of the power requirement in HT. The Center and especially surrounds will get very little power requirement.

Bottom line, the X4000 is very capable. The OP can try it out and see if he actually needs to waste any money on external amps. He could be saving up for a shiny new Lexus LX 570.

I would get some Wood Technology speaker stands or VTI speaker stands for Satellite speakers + Subs. That would be the most cost effective IMO.
