Turkey Of The Year Award

How about we start the TURKEY OF THE YEAR AWARD, it's simple:

Find the most outrageous and ridiculous a/v product listed for sale and post, it could be new magic cables, CDs that burn in your system, liquid applied to DVDs and CDs that "extract" audible nuances (I'm not kidding this stuff is for sale in a "high-fi" catalog), markers for CDs, well you get the drift. Then say about Thanksgiving time we can count the votes and see who won the biggest, baddest TURKEY. We don't have to notify the dealer, manufacturer, etc. that they won this most coveted award, to keep things civil. We can set an annual gallery of past and present winners. And if Gene and the gang say it's ok we can send a hearty congratulations to the lucky party, but only if they say it's okay.:D

Can we do it? Hey everybody has awards for everything why not AUDIOHOLICS?!

My first thought would be to vote for the $1800 CD demagnetizer gadget I read about recently. The explanation that the dyes in the CD label have small magnetic fields sounds plausible but I still don't see how minimal magnetic fields have anything to do with a a 680 nm laser focusing a beam of light on the surface of the CD to read pits and lands.

MDS,

How about the "AURIC ILLUMINATOR" liquid applied to your CDs and DVDs to "capture" nuances and details your player misses!!!!

Man we really need to do this award forum!

Hey Seth,

What do you think? Good or bad idea? It'll add some interest around here.

You've seen all the stuff outhere that would make great candidates!:D

Stratman,
I think this is a great idea for the kinds of people that frequent this forum. Someone here (forget who) has the Arthurc C. Clarke quote 'Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced' as part of their signature and that pretty much sums it up. Make up a bunch of techno sounding mumbo jumbo and people eat it up. Like most great lies there is a small kernel of truth behind the lies but most of it is absolutely preposterous and fun to read.

I saw this cute little speaker going for something like $70 on Ebay. I had some really good specs, which I found amazing that such a small, cute, little white van speaker could reach down to 20hz.:)

Anyone who totally discounts cables (speaker or interconnects), or CD cleaning/ enhancing liquid to improve sound quality should probably win the The Turkey Of The Year award imho.
You actually believe that CD cleaning/enhancing liquid makes them sound better?

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner.

My vote would be for poorly recorded CDs. My daughter brought home a CD the other day and while I quite enjoyed the music it was horribly compressed and sounded just awful. The kids didn't really notice until I popped in a well recorded disc and they agreed it sounded much better.

Why oh why do they compress the music and then put it on a medium that offers a huge dynamic range?

Compression and poor sound quality are turkeys any year.

Wooden Knob - please no jokes....

From the site:

Good vibrations, Bad vibrations it’s all about vibrations!! RAM would like to introduce a new signature level knob developed for the mighty Silver Rock potentiometer. The standard bakelite knob is certainly the best sounding compromise... but now Audio Consulting has taken this aspect of the Silver Rock much further. The new knobs are custom made with beech wood and bronze where the bronze is used as the insert to mount to the stem of the volume pot. The beech wood is coated several times with C37 lacquer for best sound as pointed out by Dieter Ennemoser. How can this make a difference??? Well, hearing is believing as we always say. The sound becomes much more open and free flowing with a nice improvement in resolution. Dynamics are better and overall naturalness is improved. Here is a test for all you Silver Rock owners. Try removing the bakelite knobs and listen. You will be shocked by this! The signature knobs will have an even greater effect…really amazing! The point here is the micro vibrations created by the volume pots and knobs find their way into the delicate signal path and cause degradation (Bad vibrations equal bad sound). With the signature knobs micro vibrations from the C37 concept of wood, bronze and the lacquer itself compensate for the volume pots and provide (Good Vibrations) our ear/brain combination like to hear…way better sound!!

Oh yeah:

Price: $485.00

Thanks Clint!!! for making a dull day a little bright! I've been saying it all along the only thing this site needs is a little humour.

These have to be in the top ten! But how would you compare them to the "Auric Illuminator"?:D LOL!!

For Pete's sake how can a lacquered knob affect anything besides aesthetics?!! And what riles me up is that some poor shmuck will be smart enough and pay 500.00 for a knob promising clarity of music. Oh I love the C37 lacquer, come on, I'd respect this more if it was polished with rattlesnake oil.

My Favorite

From the website:

The SHAKTI Electromagnetic Stabilizer (aka "the Stone") has three internal trap circuits (Microwave, RF and Electric Field) to absorb the broadest spectrum of EMI. Placement on automotive CPUs has measurably increased engine horsepower. It also improves resolution for virtually all-major components in high definition audio/video systems. Music reproduction is clearer, with more liquidity, dynamics and focus. The improved inter-transient silence allows the listener to hear ambient cue information essential for accurate perception of stage depth, width and unwavering imaging. High quality video systems will benefit from SHAKTI devices near power supplies, projection guns and laser disc/DVD players. Reduced color noise and improved convergence alignment are some of the improvements that can occur. In automotive applications, where space allows, the unit should be securely taped and/or cable tied to the top of the CPU.

Yours for the low, low price of $230

Idiot!...sitting here thinking horsepower came from internal combustion.

Forget Viagra, try the new SHAKTI Johnson, simply tape or cable tie to top of...
