I saw Crossroads the other day at HDNET, I don't care for Ralph Machio, but the movie has Vai "cutting heads" against Machio for Willie's soul.....a bunch of brilliant guit playing! I believe Arlen Roth did the slide work and of course Vai has to be seen. The movie plods along but the ending is worth it. I'm off to BB to buy the DVD. (for nostalgia);)

The slide work was done by Ry Cooder.

Steve Hackett - very much innovative, no doubt original, pioneered tapping... he is very underrated.
I second that!

Also Steve Howe, Steve Moorse, Stevie Ray, and pretty much any guy named Steve :)

As for Jazz, the guitarist from the Band Special EFX is amazing but I cant remember his name.

Of course as Jeff pointed out, IMO Pat Metheny is the greatest guitar player that ever lived!

Thanks Dobyblue,

I stand corrected, he also did The Buena Vista Social Club...an ode to Afro-Cuban music.

Hey Gene,

I think the guy from Special FX is Chieli Minucci (not 100% sure)

Page and SRV are my favorites, and the rest of my top 10 would certainly be made up from those already mentioned. A few others I have also found to be excellent, but not mentioned are:

I saw Tim Reynolds play an acoustic concert with Dave Matthews - he was definately talented.

I saw Doyle Bramhall on some HD channel - he was also excellent and very soulful.

I've always thought Dave Navarre to be one of better modern rockers.

And I've always thought Lindsay Buckingham had a unique style.

Jimmy Page is my 1-10. He may not be the best, but his riffs are. IMO

Here is a guy that Clapton says he's probably one the best around: J.J. Cale, infact Clapton and Cale are coming out with a new CD (or it just might have been released this week)

You said it brother, Jimm Page has to be one of the best ever. You know it's a Page riff right off the bat!

No particular order

S. Henderson-Tribal Tech/Solo
J. Petrucci-Dream Theater/Liquid Tension
S. Howe-Yes
S. Morse-Dregs
S. Vai-Wherever he wants to be
T. Meeks-Days of the New...way overlooked
Guitar player for Ratt...can't remember name...I'm pushin' forty.
Guy who plays for Alejandro Sanz...sorry for not knowing name.

These are based on my listening preference but would qualify regardless.

Hendrix, Vaughn, Page...too limited. Tight at what they play/played however too blues specific.

Good thread. Lots of great players mentioned. I see someone finally mentioned Dimebag and Zakk Wylde. Listen to some acoustic Zakk and become a believer.
