9.1 question

I would like to know just how the 9.1 set-up works. I know it works for stereo, but does it matrix the prologic and dolby digital formats into the 9.1 set-up. How do you set-up the speakers for that? ( location and type)
Thanks

I beleive that 9.1 is:

Front Left
Center
Front Right
Prescence Left
Prescence Right
Rear Left
Rear Right
Back Left
Back Right
LFE

The prescence speakers go above the front speakers to add to the DSP effect. I could be wrong though...

9.1 (also the possibility of having 9.2 or 9.3) on the 5805 is:-

Front Left
Centre
Front Right
Surround Left A
Surround Left B
Surround Right A
Surround Right B
Surround Back Left
Surround Back Right

You can set it up to use either Surround A or B or both Surround A & B speakers. The current Denon's have this feature but Surround A & B share amplification, the 5805's are seperate. Both Surround A and Surround B would produce the same signal. You can apply Matrix processing if you want to use the Surround Backs as well but you also have the option to switch Matrix processing Off and have the Surround Backs simultaneously replicating what comes out of the Surround Left and Right channels e.g Surround Left info comes out of Surround Back Left etc.

Good review! :)

Also surprised to see that it has full bass management in the analogue domain. Very nice indeed!

I am glad that the gag order has now been lifted :D
Repeat after me:

There is currently no other product on the market with the sophistication and processing power of the Denon 5805 It is a statement piece all others including separates now must play catch-up to compete with it ;)

Gene, What a great review (of a great product).......
In your review you mentioned the little green Audyssey light changing to red if parameters were changed. What exactly does this mean? Is Audyssey still engaged if light changes from green to red, or does this put it into a different mode? I would also like to run my subwoofers a little hot, but doing this turns the green light to red. Is this a bad thing?

Geoh

Yes Audyssey will still be engaged. You can also go back and restore default setting.

Haha too many connectors? Don't blame Denon, blame the industry for having too many formats. Denon just happens to support all of them ;) You can always slap some masking tape over the unused connectors....

Yes restoring defaults is pretty easy (if you've saved parameters after running Audyssey setup).
Another question if you will......
Did you get a chance to compare DenonLink to iLink? I'm presently using DenonLink (default to iLink for SACD) because I also like to listen to the 5910 through it's 2/ch analog output. If using iLink exclusively analog outputs are turned off in the 5910, unlike DenonLink which will still pass analog. I don't think using HDMI for audio will let you default to iLink for SACD, you have to use the multichannel analog output of the 5910.
All very confusing I know, having so many digital connecting options can be challenging. Hopefully DenonLink will be able to transmit SACD in the near future.
Anyway thanks for the very comprehensive review.
Anybody doubting the 5805's performance capabilities and/or ability to compete against the best separates available, hasn't tried it!

Regards,

geoh

I just wanted to add a small note about the writer of this new Denon review. His wife should get a lot of credit for letting him spend so much time on such a magnificent and wonderful review!

Thanks for our readership! :)

Wow, what can I say...

Great review of an incredible piece of engineering.

All I need now is the 10,000 square foot house to put it in! Working on the WAF for that one... :D

Thanks for the great review! I especially enjoyed the measurements. This review only confirms my long held belief that Flagship receivers are the way to go! :D

I currently own the Denon 5805 after coming from a Pioneer 59TXi, which along w/ a Velodyne DD-18 allowed me to have a near perfect +/- 3db FR from 20hz to 20.

I changed over the Denon for two reasons. First I assumed that MultiEQ would be superior to MCACC and secondly I wanted to get a more powerful subwoofer and have a receive that had a built-in subwoofer EQ.

My initial results are disappointing on both fronts. I find the the MultiEQ makes everything way to bright. In fact, looking at the OSD the Denon EQ is cranking nearly all of my treble frequencies by 4-6 DB. I am using a tripod, well away from any reflective surfaces. The sound comes of bright and definately is not superior to the Pioneer's MCACC. Many users are AVS are reporting the same thing. For some reason the Denon REALLY cranks up the treble.

Secondly, when playing a bass heavy song or movie clip I noticed that the bass sounded nearly identical w/ the EQ on and off. This is easy to check as you can do an nearly instant on/off check by using the remote. After reading Audioholic's review I know why! The Denon EQ does not appear to be EQing the bass frequencies. I'm shocked that Audioholics passed this off as if it was no biggie. Doesn't it bother anyone that the before and after graph were nearly identical in the lower FR? There is no doubt I received a much cleaner, more dynamic bass response when using the Pioneer/DD-18 combo. Does the Denon EQ Equalize subwoofers? Inquiring owners want to know!

Lastly, at one time someone posted a before/after graph of the Pioneer MCACC EQ on the AVS forum. MCACC produced a VERY flat graph for a single location, much flatter than the graphs posted in the review.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE the Denon so far, but at $6k I think there are some questions that need to be answered. Number one for me is where is the missing subwoofer EQ?

I also think a follow-up/comparision of the Pioneer Elite MCACC is in order.

Getting the company's going with wireless speakers would go a long way and maybe get some new blood of listeners that look at the back of any of these and just gets a boombox. I understand how they could be run off.
