Thanks for the great review! I especially enjoyed the measurements. This review only confirms my long held belief that Flagship receivers are the way to go!
I currently own the Denon 5805 after coming from a Pioneer 59TXi, which along w/ a Velodyne DD-18 allowed me to have a near perfect +/- 3db FR from 20hz to 20.
I changed over the Denon for two reasons. First I assumed that MultiEQ would be superior to MCACC and secondly I wanted to get a more powerful subwoofer and have a receive that had a built-in subwoofer EQ.
My initial results are disappointing on both fronts. I find the the MultiEQ makes everything way to bright. In fact, looking at the OSD the Denon EQ is cranking nearly all of my treble frequencies by 4-6 DB. I am using a tripod, well away from any reflective surfaces. The sound comes of bright and definately is not superior to the Pioneer's MCACC. Many users are AVS are reporting the same thing. For some reason the Denon REALLY cranks up the treble.
Secondly, when playing a bass heavy song or movie clip I noticed that the bass sounded nearly identical w/ the EQ on and off. This is easy to check as you can do an nearly instant on/off check by using the remote. After reading Audioholic's review I know why! The Denon EQ does not appear to be EQing the bass frequencies. I'm shocked that Audioholics passed this off as if it was no biggie. Doesn't it bother anyone that the before and after graph were nearly identical in the lower FR? There is no doubt I received a much cleaner, more dynamic bass response when using the Pioneer/DD-18 combo. Does the Denon EQ Equalize subwoofers? Inquiring owners want to know!
Lastly, at one time someone posted a before/after graph of the Pioneer MCACC EQ on the AVS forum. MCACC produced a VERY flat graph for a single location, much flatter than the graphs posted in the review.
Don't get me wrong I LOVE the Denon so far, but at $6k I think there are some questions that need to be answered. Number one for me is where is the missing subwoofer EQ?
I also think a follow-up/comparision of the Pioneer Elite MCACC is in order.
