Wise decision, most who asked about AVR vs integrated or separates usually are preconceived and would go with the more expensive option regardless.

For only $50 more I hope you go for the new ones from Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01HL8KYAY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1501347872&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=denon+avr-x3300w&psc=1&smid=A2H3DYB5PUVNNI
New (or Open Box) Denon from Authorized reseller (amazon is authorized by Denon) = 3 year warranty
Any refub = 1 year
In this case $50 difference is no brainer which one I'd go with.
I also 100% approve your decision to go with Denon X3300w. It's the right part with right features.

look carefully into your imac headphones out. it hides a nice trick up it's sleeve.
https://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/46605/how-do-i-tell-if-my-mac-supports-mini-toslink
check the 2nd answer.
then purchase this cable and you're all set:
https://www.amazon.com/C2G-Cables-27016-Toslink-Cable/dp/B0002JFN1A = For Optical Audio In (like CD in for example)
also Thunderbolt to HDMI cable is a thing and it carries audio as well.
https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Mini-DisplayPort-Thunderbolt-Adapter/dp/B00NH13K8S
My iMac is the 2015 model. And after doing what you said and a little research, it says that "The S/PDIF optical digital output is automatically selected when an S/PDIF optical digital output device is detected on the external combination audio port." [Source: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204392 ]. So if I want to use that port, I would have to purchase a stereo mini to TOSlink, correct? But such cable doesn't exist, correct? And if that is correct, then I'm left with only one choice being the Thunderbolt to HDMI cable, aren't I? In that case, I only have to run the cable from the thunderbolt port to any HDMI input on the receiver, correct?

Please click on links on my previous post. I link to both Mini-Toslink SPDIF cables and mini-dp to hdmi cable options. both should work fine.
No need to buy expensive versions of these cables either.
