How to get a guitar amp sound without the guitar amp

I'm a guitarist thinking of setting up a jam room by running everything through a P.A. Can I still get guitar amp sound this way? Is this what a pre-amp would be for? What's the best equipment for the job?

Im not sure what you are asking? I play and collect guitars and amps, but I would never want their sound in a critical listening system..

If you are looking for something that leans towards pro audio but is not, try a Crown XLS amplifier and Cerwin Vega 215 speakers...

Look into the Fractal Audio Axe FX 2 or the older Ultra. I have not played through a tube amp in years it is that good.

You could always get yourself a Line 6 POD HD300/400/500 and connect it to the line in of your sound system.
