Subwoofer application musical v.s. home theater

If using for music only, you only need a sub that will go down to 30 Hz. 40 Hz being the lowest note on a piano. You will save lots of power that is being wasted reproducing noise, that will muddy the sound.

Isolating dialogue/vocals to only center channel?

The only way i know of doing that is to get more speakers & put them out of phase ,anything paned to the center will be canceled ,speech, vocals, guitar solo's ect. Thats how karaoke machines remove the vocals. Just get another center & wire it out of phase.

    $600-$800 budget

Hi Smoke! Look for used PA gear,i picked up a pair of EAW 150's for 500.00 .They are 1000 watt RMS per cab & are compact .The cabs had the usual road wear ,but for less than 100.00 they look new. Best bang for the buck!

Why does a larger enclosure give you more output?

As long as speaker & box are matched ,bigger box moves more air.An old altec voice of the theater with a 80 watt driver will still put many high powered small boxes to shame. Its up to you ,big boxes with less power,or small boxes that require lots of power. Hope this helps,as simple as i can...

    Attic sub!

I'm thinking of building a down firing sub in the attic, just had the central air upgraded & the old intake is not being used anymore. Instead of closing up the vent 20''x 20'' i was thinking of building a box & loading it with a 18'' RCF 1000 watt sub. This would make the wife happy & freeing...

    Auralex SubDude

I use subs for live bands & when you have to use the stage as a platform, the last thing, you want is the sub coupled with the stage vibrating into mics. Without decoupling the sound is muddy with numerous other feedback & resonant problems. When your running at 127 to 130 spl they make a...

    Using 15'' & 18'' subs together

Thanks guys, lots of good info.Im thinking 15's & tops per side & 18's coupled front of stage.I run the subs on aux ,so all that gets in will be bass guitar ,bass drum & low toms. Not sure on placement yet as it will depend on the room. Thanks again for the input, greatly appreciated.

Elevated sub - yes or no?

Maybe for some ,but i run 4 subs ,pushing 3200 watts per pair, without the decoupling there would be no art on the walls & a really p'd off wife. Sham is a bit harsh, they work for me & anything that keeps the wife happy is great in my books.lol

    Using 15'' & 18'' subs together

Ahhh,i see what your getting at,perhaps raising the high pass on the 15's to 40 or 50 once things get cooking would clean things up at high levels.

    Using 15'' & 18'' subs together

I used Butterworth 24 db/oct. I have a choice of 6,12,18,24,48. 24 is what EAW uses. The processor settings for both cabs are the same, even the PEQ at 30 Hz with 5 db gain. These are the settings form the EAW site & are the same for both So far sounds great ,but as you said ,i haven't pushed...

    Using 15'' & 18'' subs together

Thanks fuzz, The specs on both cabs are the same, they will both do 20hz & both have 1000 rms RCF woofers.I put a hi pass of 30 hz on both & so far things sound pretty good. Using 15'' & 18'' subs together

Hi,Has anybody used a combo of 15's & 18's subs? I have a pair of EAW sb150's & sb180's. I have read that you are not suppose to use different size subs together? I was thinking of Xover the 15's at 90hz to 150hz & the 18's at 90hz to 30 hz. Anyway i tried them with all Xover at 80hz and they...
