This might be true if your running tiny speakers connected to a equally cheap and nasty AVR..So a Sub might well be needed to equal out...

All my PSB speakers are nominally 6 ohm and dip into 4 ohm on every system and I have no issue with imaging or smoothness of frequency...

I have speakers that are truly full range and I still use subs with them, with an AVR acting as a preamp. They sound glorious:)
