What about Avatar, The Dark Knight, and Up? There are many others.
Avatar was shot in 16:9 but composed for and cropped for 2.35:1 as well. In 2D releases it was shown in 2.35:1 and in 3D in cinemas with fixed non 16:9 screens. In 16:9 screens it was shown in 16:9. All they would have to do is release a 2.35:1 edition blu ray of it. James Camroon likes working like that, most of his 2.35:1 films are shot in super 35 where the full 1.37:1 frame (silent film ratio as no optical soundtrack) is exposed but composed for 2.35:1 and prints are cropped to that and squeezed for anamorphic projection. The advantage is that you get an instant full screen edition as well without pan and scan when its not cropped. Essentially he did the same for Avatar but with a 16:9 frame instead of a 1.37:1.
The Dark Kinght was also shot in 2.35:1 but in certain Imax scenes its the 1.44:1 Imax ratio so it won't make a lot of difference in the majority of the film. With Up as its in the 1.85:1 ratio you will just get a bit of pillarboxing like watching a 4:3 film on a 16:9 TV, you can always zoom to 2.35:1 is you really want to.
I never have had a problem with letterboxing or pillarboxing though, I just ignore the black bars and watch the film.
Its not supposed to be that sort of TV for just general watching, its supposed to give a sort of 'cinema' experience.

Runco already had one years ago, but it's an in-wall RPTV. JVC had a prototype at some point.
But the JVC never reached the marketplace and I seriously doubt that very many brought that RP TV as it would cost a fortune.

I am still not exactly understanding your usage, especially when you say getting rid of 90% of vertical bars or something.
By using the maximum overscan setting, the 2.35 AR movies now look like 1.85 AR movies; the top and bottom bars are a lot less.

The subtitles are all still there. I don't feel like I miss anything. And most importantly, the picture is not distorted at all - unlike the Stretch modes.

With the traditional zoom function, I feel like half the subtitles are missing.

See? You are OBVIOUSLY not using the overscan feature as it was meant to be. You are simply using it as a zoom feature.

If I cut out 25% of my picture, I would be quick to notice. However, I don't hate 2.35 AR so much that I will ever cut out 25% of my pic. So, I hope everything is clear to you now.
