YouTube - Neil Peart - Der Trommler (R30)
Yea, speed is impressive, but not too many people can do different time signatures with their legs and hands at the same time... and then freestyle during that. It's so smooth people don't realize what he's doing.

Watch about 1/3 in (after he switches kits). Listen to the "kick+tamborine" beat he's keeping with his feet. (1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2-3) then listen to just his hands...

Sorry all, but Animal takes the cake. He let Buddy think he was better.

Buddy Rich was the master that tought and inspired so many of todays good drummers, including Carl Palmer.

I still think nobody holds a candle to the SNL Church Chat lady (Dana Carvy) playing the sticks. Too bad there is no Youtube video on it. Priceless. :D

Neil is great, among the top rock drummers but not quite up to the likes of Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer, Phil Collins and Steve Gadd IMO. Though his true strength resides in his great song writer ability making him responsible for most of Rush's best songs IMO.

Check out this goodie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_9xHqLZdYY
Gene you must really love Genesis!:) Phil Collins, most people today don't even consider him as a drummer, or at the very least remember him as one. On that particular list you should of included Ginger Baker as well. IMO though Neil is the man.

Not sure where you are coming from since he is still highly revered in many music magazines and most noted for his jazz work in the earlier days of Brand X. His timing is impeccable and he has a defining sonic signature of his own. He was worked with some of the best musicians in the industry all of whom hold high respect for his stick work.

If you wanna rag on his bubble gum solo work that’s fine, but don’t tread on his drums

Phil is a smokin drummer, its too bad the younger generation has lost touch with most of these older musicians in favor of the flavor of the month bands who's only style of playing is fast & hard,no real skill just speed.

In all honesty

I got into Genesis after Gabriel departed. I was more into the louder/harder bands at that time in my life:eek:. I remember Chester Thompson though, he wasn't bad either.

Clint,
Now, that was FUNNY! As many times as Rush has said he would never run for president, and then to see that, and Ann Coulter as the VP! My gosh...

"Pelosi!? How did SHE get this number!?" LOL!

You know, it sure is good to be able to poke a little bit of fun at oneself once in a while and not take yourself too seriously. It's nice to see that he has that ability, and so does Ms. Coulter. Good for them.
