Haven't started a thread in a while but I was listening to some of my favorite songs and wanted to post this. Even though Van Morrison Moondance is my favorite song of all time I have a different favorite stanza. Suite Judy Blue Eyes from 1969 when I was a kid.
Chestnut Brown Canary
Ruby Throated Sparrow
Sing The Song
Don't Be Long
Thrill Me To The Marrow.

Still gives me goosebumps.

One of my favorite CSN&Y songs.

Little known song, but one of my favorite lyrics is Jethro Tull's Skating Away on the Thin Ice of a New Day. The entire lyric is a masterpiece. (IMHO)

"Meanwhile back in the year one
When you belonged to no one
You didn't stand a chance, son
If your pants were undone

'Cause you were bred, for humanity
And sold to society
One day you'll wake up, in the present day
A million generations removed from expectations
Of being who you really want to be

Skating away, skating away, skating away
On the thin ice of the new day

So as you push off from the shore
Won't you turn your head once more
And make your peace with everyone
For those who choose to stay
Will live just one more day
To do the things they should've done

And as you cross the wilderness
Spinning in your emptiness
You feel you have to, pray
Looking for a sign, that the universal mind
Has written you into the passion play

Skating away, skating away, skating away
On the thin ice of the new day

And as you cross the circle line
Well, the ice wall creaks behind
You're a rabbit on the run
And the silver splinters fly
In the corner of your eye
Shining in the setting sun

Well, do you ever get the feeling
That the story's too damn real
And in the present tense?
Or that everybody's on the stage
And it seems like you're the only
Person sitting in the audience?

Skating away, skating away, skating away
On the thin ice of the new day"
Skating away, skating away, skating away"

Just about anything by Tom Waits! ;) Lou Reed... Morphine... Billy Joel...

But that one song... I was told before I got into Dylan, back in my first year in Music School, 1992, that there was a Dylan song for everybody... something that would just cut through and speak to your soul. My friend lent me Blood on the Tracks. On a fourth or seventh playthrough of the disc, I found myself crying to:

If You See Her Say Hello

If you see her, say hello
She might be in Tangier
She left here last early spring
Is livin' there, I hear
Say for me that I'm all right
Though things get kind of slow
She might think that I've forgotten her
Don't tell her it isn't so
We had a falling-out
Like lovers often will
And to think of how she left that night
It still brings me a chill
And though our separation
It pierced me to the heart
She still lives inside of me
We've never been apart
If you get close to her
Kiss her once for me
I always have respected her
For doin' what she did and gettin' free
Oh, whatever makes her happy
I won't stand in the way
Though the bitter taste still lingers on
From the night I tried to make her stay
I see a lot of people
As I make the rounds
And I hear her name here and there
As I go from town to town
And I've never gotten used to it
I've just learned to turn it off
Either I'm too sensitive
Or else I'm gettin' soft
Sundown, yellow moon
I replay the past
I know every scene by heart
They all went by so fast
If she's passin' back this way
I'm not that hard to find
Tell her she can look me up
If she's got the time

Joni Mitchell Carrie - awesome vocals and Joni tells a story. One of my all time favorites.
Jefferson Airplane Volunteers - my favorite Airplane song. Remember the peanut butter and jelly sandwich inside of the LP jacket?

My favorites are on Surrealistic Pillow....Comin' Back to Me gets me every time....drops me right back into my arrival in San Francisco in '71. The whole album resonates, tho, just one of my all time favorites what with classics like White Rabbit and Somebody to Love but also Today and How Do You Feel (well, all of them). Now I'll have to go take a peek at Volunteers again :)

You don't get the PBJ effect unless you have the LP jacket. :) I only have the Airplanes Greatest hits on CD these days but Somebody to Love really put these guys over the top. Gracie Slick at her finest.

I think the only JA album I have on cd is Surrealistic Pillow, and one digital live recording from the Volunteers tour I think (from Wolfgang's Music). Rest all on vinyl. Have a few Hot Tuna on cd, tho.

If I die before I wake, feed Jake.
He's been a good dog.

I do not like country music, but that song tugs at my heart strings. I love my pooches.

Joni Mitchell is an incredible writer and performer. You know she's Canadian, right? Damn Yankees take all of our best artists and ship 'em off to Cali. ;)

No. That's just where the Drugs and Free-Love were, at the time.

I'm going with rather a light-hearted entry :) based on 1940's Sir Lancelot - (Shame And) Scandal in the Family

In Trinidad there was a family with much confusion as you will see,
There was a mama and a papa and a boy who was grown,
He wanted to get married - have a wife of his own,
He found a young girl who suited him nice,
He went to his papa to seek for advice,
His papa said son, I have to say no, That girl is your sister but your mama don't know!

Woe it's me, shame and scandal in the family,
Woe it's me, shame and scandal in the family,

A week went by and the summer came down,
Soon the best girl on the island was found,
He went to his papa to name the day,
His papa his head and to him he did say,
You can't marry that girl, I have to say no,
That girl is your sister but your mama don't know,

Woe it's me, shame and scandal in the family x4,

He went to his mama, he covered his head,
He told his mama what the papa just said,
His mama she laughed, she said, go man go, your daddy ain't your daddy but your daddy don't know,

Woe it's me, shame and scandal in the family,
Oh yeh, woe it's me, shame and scandal in the family,
Woe-woe it's me, shame and scandal in the family,
Woe-woe it's me, shame and scandal in the family

One of my fav version of this song :)

I believe it's about holding up fronts even though it doesn't make sense to. Mad props for the lines Far above our heads are the icy heights that contain all reason and It's a luscious mix of words and tricks... Some beautiful lyrical stuff there.

I think I'll go home and mull this over
Before I cram it down my throat
At long last it's crashed, its colossal mass
Has broken up into bits in my moat

Lift the mattress off the floor
Walk the cramps off
Go meander in the cold
Hail to your dark skin
Hiding the fact you're dead again
Underneath the power lines seeking shade
Far above our heads are the icy heights that contain all reason

It's a luscious mix of words and tricks
That let us bet when you know we should fold
On rocks I dreamt of where we'd stepped
And of the whole mess of roads we're now on

Hold your glass up, hold it in
Never betray the way you've always known it is
One day I'll be wondering how
I got so old just wondering how
Never got cold wearing nothing in the snow

This is way beyond my remote concern
Of being condescending

All these squawking birds won't quit
Building nothing, laying bricks

Hold your glass up, hold it in
Never betray the way you've always known it is
One day I'll be wondering how
I got so old just wondering how
Never got cold wearing nothing in the snow

This is way beyond my remote concern
Of being condescending

All these squawking birds won't quit
Building nothing, laying bricks
