Didn't get much help in the general discussion. Hoping for more here...

Hello fellas,

I am not sure I am utilizing all my sweet A/V system can do for me. For the past 2 years I have been thoroughly enjoying it. I have a RX-V2500 Yamaha receiver, 5.1 Aperion Audio system, Xbox 360, comcast digital HD cable, and new 42 inch panasonic HDTV plasma. All in a small carpeted room/corner of my new basement.

At the time I set it all up well, researched best settings for my HDTV and incorporated, did the YPAO on the yamaha receiver, then changed speaker size to small, bass LFE set to sub, changed crossover to 80, experimented with sub location, and have experimented with DSP, PLII, and other settings on receiver when listening to TV, movies, gaming, and listening to music.

All in all I am confident I am doing alot right. And the experience is stellar.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if I am not tapping into the full potential of the experience - specifically in the receiver dept.

For example, when listening to music, I do like some of the Rock settings (roxy theater, etc.) or straight effect, however, all of those only come through 2 channels, and thus, wind up listening to music with in 7 channel stereo instead, because it sounds fuller. Are there any settings or ways to enjoy the other effects (roxy theater, etc.) through 7 channels (all speakers)? Is there a PLII setting or others I can tap into that utilize all 5.1of my speakers when listening to music (instead of just 2)?

Last question: I get confused about which effect is actually being utilized when watching movies, TV, or xbox 360? Like if/when I choose things like PLII or DTH...AND then choose one of the DSP modes like Sci-Fi or Adventure. Am I listening to both at the same time, or is one trumping the other each time I select it? For example, I almost always choose "Sci-Fi" or "Adventure" when listening to movies, and choose "Game" when playing Xbox 360. Whatcha'll think? What's a gal to do?

Any thoughts? Tips? Any other effects you all like?

Thanx in advance, boys!

I don't think there's any trumping going on...it's actually a combination of the two if my understanding is correct.

First you need to select a decoder (Dolby Prologic II, IIx, DTS Neo, etc). This will decode your audio signal and split em up in to the right channels. The DSP programs (Sci-Fi, Adventure, etc) add special 'post processing' to the singal to recreate venues (like the Roxy Theater, etc) or emphasize dialog (Sci-Fi),etc. It's not that one trumps the other...rather you can mix and match decoders to the various DSP modes so that you can choose whatever sounds best.

Hope this helps. I'm sure one of the more knowledgeable peepz here can confirm the Dolby upconvert part...

You can set the Decoder on Auto for the unit to automagically select a decoder based on the signal flag from input.

You can select Movie Standard (for watching movies) from the DSP selection to reproduce the 'ideal' movie theater surround effects without altering the original surround sound positioning. Apparently this mode just adds reverb.

For example, when listening to music, I do like some of the Rock settings (roxy theater, etc.) or straight effect, however, all of those only come through 2 channels, and thus, wind up listening to music with in 7 channel stereo instead, because it sounds fuller. Thus, I believe what you need to do is set your decoder to Neural (not sure if the Dolby ones upconvert a stereo signal to 5.1) and select your favorite DSP program and you should be set.

Hope this helps....one of the more knowledgeable members of the forum can confirm the dolby upconvert part :)
