Yamaha YST-SW1500 or M&K V1250 or SVS 20-39

Hi

I am trying to select which of the following subwoofers to get for my HT setup and will appreciate some feedback or advice:

Yamaha YST-SW1500
M&K V1250 (same price as the Yamaha)
M&k MX-150
SVS PCi / PC-Plus 20-39

My current HT setup as follows:
Denon 3805 AV Receiver
Dynaudio Audience 82 Main Speakers
Dynaudio Audience 122C Centre Speakers

I am still in the process of building my HT system so I do not have any subwoofer or rear speakers as yet.

The system is for 60% HT and 40% music use. I listen to all kinds of music, just not rock or heavy metal stuff. I like good bass for HT but not so for music. I read on a post somewhere that the M&K sub is fantastic for HT but not so good for music? I also read on another post that the Yamaha sub listed is a good compromise for music and HT. I don't know if there is any truth to the posts so I will appreciate any feedback on what you guys think.

I am in Australia and initial research shows both the M&K V1250 and the Yamaha sub to be about the same price but the M&K MX-150 is about A$1000 dearer.

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Regards,
Stephen

Hey! I used to live in Perth, Geraldton (SP) & Sidney

I've never heard the Yamaha, but I would go for the M&K any day of the week. They make some great subs. Sound very acurate with music. Yamaha? = receivers imhp.

Hope this helps

PS: having Dynaudio speakers & yamaha sub? Just doesn't sound right :D

Thanks for your input. What about SVS cylindrical sub PCi 20-39. I know they don't have any dealer in Australia but how do they compare to the M&K and the Yamaha sub? Will appreciate if anyone can share their thoughts on this.

I included the Yamaha sub because of a comment posted by someone who claims to have sold M&K sub but still thinks the Yamaha sub in question is better for combination of movies and musics. His quote as follows;

"Yamaha Subwoofer I hear you cry, what about M&K, Velodyne or some other specialist subwoofer manufacturer if money is no object, well I've sold M&K and Velodyne - in fact during various periods, we were Australia's leading independent retailer for both products - and I can honestly tell you that the YST-SW1500 is better than anything I've heard from any other manufacturer for a combination of music and movies."

M&K, no question. It all depends on your budget which one, but they are all fantastic subwoofers.

Oh, how you liking those Dynaudio's?! I have a pair of Audience 72s and Audience 42s in storage right now that I plan on re-setting up next semester in my new college apartment. I had them back home before I replaced them with S-150s from M&K. I think they fantastic speakers.

I think the Dynaudio speakers are great. Before I bought it, I was choosing between them and the JMLab Focal Cobalt 826 Main speakers. Now that I have it, I think I made the right choice. The JMLab speakers were too bright and lacking in bass response. My Dynaudio speakers are very warm sounding and excellent for both music and HT. Only problem with them is that they seems to require a lot of power to drive? I think my Denon AV receiver might be lacking a bit of grunt in this department even though they are supposedly rated at 120W x 7 discrete. I have to crank up the volume level reasonably high (< -10db) before the speakers will come "alive". I guess I will have to get a power amplifier (at least 200Wx2) sometimes down the track.

Oh yeah, you did make the right choice!

The Dynaudio's, to me, are just plain great speakers. I prefer very neutral sounding speakers, like those made my M&K and Dynaudio. Dynaudio also makes studio monitors (like M&K) and that "type" of speaker manufacturing is really shown in Dynaudio's line. I just hate speaker manufacturers that throw in a ton of colorations to try and make their speakers "sound good." The Dyn's are NEUTRAL, open....a fantastic soundstage. I'm a big fan. You are right, they do like some juice to run. Once you get a more powerful amp you will probably find yourself liking them even more.

I have the YST 1500 and can tell you, very few subs in the market come close to it. It has best of both, fantastic for HT duty but when called for music, it is equally tight and controlled, Yamaha has been making subs for quite a long time after they bought out the Swedish compamy Audio Research and inheirted the Active Servo technology from them which they have refined over the years. At least give them a listen. Eastwood audio did a good test on them.

Eastwood is in the east coast of Australia. I live in the west. I will have to find a local Yamaha dealer to have a listen to them. Noone here has any inputs for SVS Subwoofers??
