I won one of these soundbars as a door prize and have a few questions. my room that i am using it in has an open back wall....i have quite a bit of furniture in my room as well so im afraid it might be less then ideal...does anyone have any recommendations as to how to get good sound out of this thing....has anyone used the my surround feature?

thanks

I believe Yamaha sound bars bounce the surround channels off of the side walls so you would need sidewalls enclosing your listening area versus a big open floor plan. For other brand sould bars you would have to look in their instructions to see the recommended installation requirements. You may be able to use the sound bars for the front three channels and rear surrounds powered directly by your receiver. You will need a subwoofer to get any bass. The usual subwoofer suppliers recommended include AV123, HSU, SVS etc.

The "My Surround" feature is what comes on by default before you set it up and let the computer inside do its thing. It's the equivalent of the sort of faux surround in the cheaper Yamaha-YAS70. It sounded IK to me, but not nearly as good as the 5-beam setup. I guess I'd say just set it up and then let the program take over the creation of surround effects. If it doesn't work out well in your room, there are manual controls to tweak the effects, though I haven't touched them in my room. The open back wall will definitely be a problem for getting even a hint of sound from behind you, but as I understand it, they can still give you 3-beam mode which functions as a central channel and two side surrounds as long as you have walls on the sides. Good luck.

ok cool so im assuming my surround isnt very good then. i do have 2 sidewalls that i can reflect the sound off of so i can try to use a 3 beam method..the back of the room is open

anyone else have any experience with these things?
