I'm trying to decide on the 2500 or 801 and would like to hear your comparision. Since these are older model, I can't find it anywhere to demo. Both units are in the low $600.

I have the 2500 and from all the Yamaha owners....Yamaha will be more reliable. Yamaha has been around in the home theater business for awhile. Japanese stuffs sounds about the same, unless you buy the UK made toys.
enjoy.

Onkyo is "Japanese stuff' and if all Japanese stuff sounds the same then it would sound the same as Yamaha. Onkyo has been around just as long as Yamaha and are known to be reliable as well (I have never had one problem with any Onkyo receiver I've owned).

The Yamaha RX-V2500 has received many good reviews. Those reviewers can't be all biased. Go for it!

Depends on your needs

If I was you, and you were me, I'd base my decision on which unit has the features that satisfy my needs. If I was really interested in steaming audio from my PC I would take a closer look at the NR801. However, if I needed to connect three different sources of component video to my receiver so that it could handle all of the switching I would go for the RX-V2500. That’s how I would approach this decision. Good luck…
