Hi All,

I would like the opinions of the members on an upgrade from a Yamaha RX-V295 receiver to the new RX-V 2600.

I have the 2095 for about five years now, and I love the DSP on this system. I just purchased the 2600 receiver and the receiver has about half the number of dsp types but has others that the 2095 does not have, I really don’t need the video inputs because I go direct to three video inputs on my plasma set (2-hdmi, 1-componet). I purchased the Axiom epic 60-500 7.1 system to be used with the receiver (2600) both receivers could handle the speakers.

I just have second thoughts about keeping the 2600 or returning the unit and use my older 2095.

What do you think I should do?

Thanks, always

John

wellll,, how much do you miss the DSPs on the old one? I, personally, am not a big fan of lots of DSPs and would certainly take sound quality over DSPs. I can't find the 2095 on Yamaha's website, but this is kind of your call. Only you know how big of a difference in sound resides between the two, and only you know how much you used those now-missing DSPs...

Hi Brian,

There were just a few DSPs that I liked to listen to on the 2095, is the specs. that much better for the 2600? I have to pull the manual and compare.

The RX-V2095 was a flagship receiver a few years back.

Here is a link for a review and from Yamaha.

It sounds like you may have answered your own question. There is nothing magical in the newer receivers and if the old one sounds as good (which in most cases it will IMO) or better than the new, that's great! Return that new sucker and save some money.

Thanks for the links, cjem. Unless you think the 2600 sounds considerably better, I would agree with Nick.

Speaker configuration

It sounds like your old Yamaha is a 5.1 receiver (100 Watts x 5) with 2 additional frond effects channels (25 Watts x 2). I think that the front effects channels are similar or identical to the "Presence" channels on new receivers.

If you want to run a 7.1 speaker configuration (fronts, center, surrounds, and surround backs) then you will need a new receiver with the updated DSPs to decode 6.1 channel DD and DTS soundtracks. If you are happy with 5.1 plus presence, then hold out for another year until the HDMI standards are updated and receivers included new DSPs for 7+ channel HD soundtracks.

Also keep in mind, since you aren't using the video switching functions, the Yamaha RX-V2500 ($7-800) would be a better choice for your new receiver.

P.S. How do you like your Axiom system?

Hi All,

Well I sent an email to sound distributors to ask for a return and they told me that they don't accept returns on opened box for receivers, so I'll have to keep the receiver and sell the 2095 on ebay.

The Axiom speakers I just ordered and will receive them on monday, I can't wait so I'll let you know then.

Thanks,

John
