Yamaha Speakers

I am looking at purchasing a Yamaha reciever 7.1
There does not appear to be much info on Yamaha speakers - is that because no one uses them or what? Seems that they are sold in the US but not popular in Canada??? HELP

What I had found was NS 555 main, NS -444 centre, NS-333 for back and surround and YST-SW315 10" sub. All of this for about $900 canadian plus $200 for shipping. I have never heard them and want to spend in the $1,000 price range. The downside of these is that there is no warrany if brougt in from the US. Have found a source for a Yamaha RXV-1500 in Canada

they are pretty cheap speakers (in price) but not in performance. I have tested them in a movie setup and they sounded pretty good to me! (EF Series NS-555; NS-444)

They are not the best for the money. The HX and EF series are the only ones I'd consider, and I havent even heard them. Their HTIB's are pretty good for the money, and have real amps.

In Canada, Energy and PSB are better buys.

when I was looking at the yamaha ns-555 series, i was comparing it to Infinity Primus 360. like sheep said, you should look for similar offerings from energy and PSB ...but you should LISTEN to all of them.

how much is that sub in CAD?
I presume you'll be using this setup, mostly HT?
how big is your room?

and no, it is not necessary for the brand of the receiver and speakers to match (in case that was what you were thinking)

Room is 20 x 20 with one side open to a dinning room. Sub was $225 Cdn 10" - 250 watts.

Am waiting for a price from the ottawa dealer with the reciever and energy speakers. likely not go with full front towers.

If your getting a subwoofer, towers are a waste. Sure they look cool, and they are bassy, they are not needed, and hog lots of power.

A system consisting of C-1s all round and a cc-1 center would be great. Add a subwoofer of your choosing.

2001 Audio Video sells Yamaha speakers and they have quite a few shops in Ontario. They aren't my favourite shop but I've got some great deals from them in the past. I think the models you are looking at are very good looking (with the grills on) but the sound falls short of the looks IMO. The drivers just look cheap to me, and I've yet to see a demo pair without a dented dustcaps. $900 won't get you into a PSB setup with a sub unless you are willing to go Alpha intro. Energy speakers do seem to be on sale right now (they're bringing in new models) and I think that you might want to consider looking into them like sheep suggested. Another alternative is Paradigm. You might even want to visit Futureschlop and check out the Athena Audition series, most likely the B2. They are always having sales on these guys. Another thing to make note of is that if you go bookshelfs you're going to need to budget money for stands. The only thing you really need to do is audition the speakers you're going to buy. Make sure you like the sound and if you happen to enjoy the sound from those Yamahas then they might be the speaker for you after all.

Tks for all the advice, there is no possible way to hear Yamaha speakers in Saskatoon as no one has them. Think I will grab the reciever and then start looking. London Drugs has a set of Klipsch Reference Bookshelf set on, pair of RB10s, RC-10 centre, pair of RS 10 surround and a RW-8 sub for $999. Will likely go hear them this weekend.

Sounds similar to my set-up. You will be disappointed in the SW-315 sub though. It just can't keep up. As for the speekers, with the crosover set at 60Hz, they sound pretty damn good for the money. However, they can get a little bent out of shape over heavy bass.

Up North in Canada . . .

. . . Is where a lot of the good speakers come from. For $1K check out the bookshelf speakers from Axiom Audio, PSB, and Paradigm. You save a lot on shipping and fees and get better speakers.

I’ve used various Yamaha components through the years and have found that they make some reasonably decent stuff. At least that’s what I thought until I heard their speakers. When I first heard them, I have to say that I was honestly shocked that Yamaha would actually market something that sounded so poorly. I remember standing there somewhat dumbfounded, turning to the salesman and saying “These aren’t really Yamaha’s are they ?” He looked at me with a strange expression on his face and said “I know what you mean.”, and walked away. I’m sure they’ve gotten better over time, but I’m in no hurry to find out .

intresting devisons about Yamaha speakers; thay are not univserly loved, it seems.
I have listened to two models of Yamaha speakers, I did'nt think thay were that bad, and I own a YST-SW315 which I like to think of as a "two note sub", just my $.02

hmmm indeed. I once listend to a YST-SW215 side by side with a Athena AS-P4000, the Yamaha was way better, yet Yamaha has a bad reputation with subs

Well the Insignia speakers sound a lot better than the comparable Yammy bookshelf and the Insignias are cheaper.
