yamaha rxv2500 power loss

Hi, This problem may also be common to other brands of amplifier. I purchased my rxv2500 when they were new, 8 years ago or so. When new the volume control did not need to be very high (except when playing music dvd's or surround movies to better enjoy them!) The highest would have been -10. Now, to even hear anything the volume is already at -35 and to play music dvd's or movies I go to -1. Everything seems to work fine, I'm just concerned to have the volume set that high. The unit used to get very hot and I now have a cooling fan running. Has anyone heard or noticed a similar problem and or remedy. Many Thanks, John

Is there a volume menu on the RX-V2500? If so check that to see if that has changed making youy to crank the levels. Either that or there is a problem with the pre-amp stage.

Many thanks for the info. I checked and cannot find anything in the manual regarding volume changes which would cause the problem. When you mention the pre-amp, are there any tests I could do at home or is this looking like a trip to the repair shop? If the unit is running cool can it be damaged seriously by running it at high volume (in the -10 to -1 range) Thanks again!

It's most likely not dangerous to have the volume that high provided the Yammy isn't clipping. For extremely loud music I'll run my 1800, in a very large room, up to -5db.

What speakers are you using?
Have you moved into a larger room?

Speakers are Paradigm as follows:-
Front Monitor 5 V-2
Center CC300
Rear ADP 370 V.2
Sub PS1000

These have been the same speakers all along and they are getting old too (just like the owner!) They were all set up when I ran the auto setup with the RX-v2500. All speakers are working.

If anything the system is in a smaller room now.

If the unit really has changed its gain, there is a problem. Faults of this nature are usually caused by a failing voltage regulator reducing voltage to a stage, usually somewhere in the pre amp section.

I would bet that if you looked at that unit with instruments you would find more problems than just altered gain. At the least I you would find reduced headroom and quite likely significantly increased distortion.

A unit should not change gain over time and if it does it needs service.
