Yamaha RXV-665 and multi-room vs multi-zone

I just received a Yamaha RXV-665 and want to have 5.1 in the main listening room. I also have speakers in the bedroom and on the patio. I had hoped to have the patio speakers run on a 2nd zone so I could listen to music outside while someone in watching TV inside. I also hoped I could run the bedroom speaker off whatever is on the main zone. Anyone know if I can do this with this receiver? If so, how?

Maybe, somewhat?? The receiver only has 7 channels of amplification, so the rear channel amps would somehow have to power the 2nd zone and the bedroom speakers. You can definitely do the main zone + zone 2. And you can probably do the main zone + bedroom using the Bi-amp feature, but you'll have sound in both areas at the same time unless you install some volume controls. But to have everything running simultaneously will require a separate inexpensive amp such as an Audio Source 100.

As a pre-trial, you could make all the connections and assignments in the receiver to see how it all works. Good Luck!:D

FYI, zone 2 requires your sources to use analog connections to the receiver. Boxed note @ top of pg. 57.

Multi-Zone vs Multi-Room

Thanks for the info. Does the bi-amp feature negate using zone 2. I have volume controls on the patio and bedroom speakers, so I can control the volume, but it looks like there are only enough speaker connections for 1 pair of other speakers. How do you hook up the extra amp you wrote about???

I don't know. That's something the manual doesn't cover.

On the right end of the speaker connections, there is the extra speaker connects fore zone 2 (upper) and lower is the surround back/bi-amp connection.

RCA audio/zone 2 outputs. See #s 14 & 15 on pg. 5
