Yamaha RX1050: Is it going out?

Mysterious occurrences with my Yamaha RX 1050 receiver (but I’m still hoping it’s a loose wire or connection or a minor programming issue!).
It is set up through surround sound, not using TV speakers.
We are able to use the system, but I have to play with it to get it going now!
If it’s on SmartTV, sometimes there is no sound, and then a new pop-up appears that I’ve never seen, saying “Switching audio to external speakers.” Sometimes it then switches, sometimes it doesn’t.
If I choose CableTV, sometimes there is sound right away, but other times I get a pop-up that says, “Switching audio to TV speakers.” Then I turn it off and start again. Eventually it works.
It seems to have forgotten it’s always supposed to use external speakers!
The other weird thing is that the receiver can’t seem to settle on which mode to use. Sometimes it bounces back and forth from “Dolby Digital” to “DTX -ES Mtrx” or “Neural” X” or other things I’ve never seen, even though the sound is working fine while it bounces around! As I say, I can eventually get it to work, but at times it takes several tries. Other times, it seems fine. Any clues?

I'd run a soft reset, i.e. unplug the avr for a bit, and if that didn't do it, then a full reset (per your avr manual).

Unplug your AVR, leave it unplug for 15 minutes. Reset your TV back to factory settings. Yeah it's a hassle, but it seems like a CEC, ARC issue. Plus check for a firmwear updates on both your TV and AVR.

Apple TV, doesn't play well with AVR's sometimes. Have you tried unplugging your AVR yet?
