Simply awsome

This is an unbeliveable unit. It sounds awsome.

I had a few problems with the calibration. At first it said (as did the defective unit) the center speaker was out of phase. I decided to change the polarity of said speaker. Ran the Cal. again and got a warning that the BSL was out of phase, so I changed it's polarity. I ran the cal. again and got a warning that the BSL AND the SL speakers were out of phase. I changed the BSL wires back to their original, and correct, polarity, and ran the cal. again and all was good, no warnings. Note: run the cal a few times and it WILL change it's results without you doing anything.

I haven't played with it enought to give a through review. I did watch "The Day After Tomorrow" because it is in DTS MASTER. The receiver picked it up and it was INCREDABLE!! You can get distenct sounds from every speaker.

Hopefully this unit will provide several years of service. It worries me that the last one lasted 4 hours.

I think, so far, this unit is better than units I've bought for 3X the $. The presets for surrond sound are as good as my HK AVR3 which had about 5. This unit has many more!

Overall I'm very happy with this unit. As I play with it more I'll give a more through review.

Take Care,
Todd

Be careful, your center is probably out of phase now! Make sure you wire your center positive to positive and negative to negative, no matter what the calibrations says. That applies to all speakers in the system. Here's why:-

You center likely has a second order crossover both low and high pass. In that situation it is not uncommon that the phase angle between tweeter and woofer is 180 degrees, putting the tweeter and woofer exactly out of phase at crossover. This results in a null, which is a dip in the response at the crossover region. When that occurs, the only solution is to reverse the polarity to the tweeter.

Now the auto calibration systems recognize it as an out of phase condition, which it isn't, or at least the woofers are not out of phase which is the main thing. The tweeters are, but there is no solution to that.

That is another thing I have against auto calibration programs, and personally I would never use one, and rely on my manual measurements coupled with listening.

hhhmmm...

I thought the same thing in the original unit. I.E. I would leave the speakers as hooked up (correct polarity). When I received this unit I assumed it was still picking up the same polarity violation. I know that everything is visually hooked up right, but obviously the receiver thinks that there is somithing a foul.

After I ran the Cal. a couple times all warnings were deleted.

Are you saying I should hook up the center speaker where I know the polarity is right? or should I hook it up where the internal cal. suspects it's right?

THanks,
Todd

THE CAL IS WRONG.

Connect everything positive to positive and negative to negative.

Quite honestly those auto CAD programs are a deceptive boondoggle that get you precisely wrong. They are dumb, and a second order crossover that needs tweeter polarity reversal will send them into a tail spin. Do not use it with your set up, or for that matter ever.

Roger that.

I changed the wires around so I know it's right. Thanks for the input.

I still haven't received the credit to my CC for the first defective unit. I've e-mailed Audioholics 2 times concerning this but haven't gotten a reply. (I guess some of you would consider this "muscleing" my way to a resolution).

$900 would draw just a tad bit of interest if it were in my ROTH account. I just want them to tell me why I haven't received the credit back or a response. ARE YOU LISTENING?

Mahi mahi was great on the grill BTW>

Sorry to hear that, but glad the new unit is working well.

BTW, the above quote is not muscling, it is keeping us (other potential buyers) appraised of the situation. Which is something I personally want to know about. Muscling would be directly addressing, talking to, and attempting to provoke a public response from AH via a public forum in an attempt to embarass them into resolving the issue at hand. Direct communication with a retailer should be just that, directly with them.

You might try PMing a moderator or two to see if they can get some one to respond to you.

Glad to hear the trip was fun. Enjoy the Mahi Mahi and please continue to keep us appraised of the situation.

Jack:)

All Done

Sent another e-mail today and got a response that stated the credit had been applied and should show up on my on-line statement shortly.

All is good. Now everyone has an idea how a purchase / return works through this site. A bit of a hassle but then I did get the unit (even the 2nd one) before my local stores had them. I also saved a bit of money using a coupon code that was supplied by Audioholics.

All is well, thanks, end of story, guess I haad better change my sig as the HK is now in the game room

Hi Folks,

Received my 863 yesterday that I purchased from Audioholics. READ THE ENTIRE MANUAL!!! hooked it all up. I did the calibration which showed a W1 error. This warning was for a speaker out of phase. Checked said speaker (center) and the wiring was correct. The manual said some speakers (POLK)would show this even if they were phased correctly and the calibration would stand.

All was good, put on the golf channel and let it play for a while. (Damn Tiger's good) I didn't stretch it's feet, kept a normal listening volume and started programing my 880. The receiver was on for about 3 hours. Finished programing the remote and tested..all good.

I came back into the office to check e-mail, while golf was still on, and I heard a loud BANG.

Went into the HT and the receiver was off. I tried turning it back on, but it would only stay on for 1-2 seconds. Checked the manual..Unhooked the RX from power for 30 seconds. Tried to turn it back on but it did the same thing..on for about 1-2 seconds..

I know there were no shorts in the wiring but I decided to check them first, everything was fine. Now the receiver doesn't even try to show the display, when I hit the power button, I just hear a relay click 1 time..DEAD!!

I did notice the box when I received it that it had been dropped. One of the corners were mashed in. Upon opening it, there didn't seem to be any damage, obviously there was or there was a problem with the unit from the get go.

I e-mailed audioholics around 5:30PM and haven't heard back.

I'll report,
Todd
Believe it or not it's a common problem. I Had the same thing happen to me and it was the relay switch. I purchased another one and it has worked fine ever since. Cost about $16-$20 from munufact.
