Hi Folks,

Received my 863 yesterday that I purchased from Audioholics. READ THE ENTIRE MANUAL!!! hooked it all up. I did the calibration which showed a W1 error. This warning was for a speaker out of phase. Checked said speaker (center) and the wiring was correct. The manual said some speakers (POLK)would show this even if they were phased correctly and the calibration would stand.

All was good, put on the golf channel and let it play for a while. (Damn Tiger's good) I didn't stretch it's feet, kept a normal listening volume and started programing my 880. The receiver was on for about 3 hours. Finished programing the remote and tested..all good.

I came back into the office to check e-mail, while golf was still on, and I heard a loud BANG.

Went into the HT and the receiver was off. I tried turning it back on, but it would only stay on for 1-2 seconds. Checked the manual..Unhooked the RX from power for 30 seconds. Tried to turn it back on but it did the same thing..on for about 1-2 seconds..

I know there were no shorts in the wiring but I decided to check them first, everything was fine. Now the receiver doesn't even try to show the display, when I hit the power button, I just hear a relay click 1 time..DEAD!!

I did notice the box when I received it that it had been dropped. One of the corners were mashed in. Upon opening it, there didn't seem to be any damage, obviously there was or there was a problem with the unit from the get go.

I e-mailed audioholics around 5:30PM and haven't heard back.

I'll report,
Todd

Consumer Electronics + dropping = bad news.

Sounds like it may have been damaged in shipping. Call Yamaha at the number in the users manual to see what they say, but don't hold your breath. In the future when you recieve a package that has visual damage either refuse it of have the driver notate that it was recieved damaged.

As irritating as this may seem at the moment, consider yourself lucky. Sometimes whatever may have been jarred loose by dropping it may not have caused a problem until many months later. At which point there would be little action you could take.

Make sure to keep the packaging and everything that came with it. If you threw the box out, go get it out of the trash. Also take pictures of everything.

Trust me..I didn't throw anything out. With regards to checking the packing, I own an electronics company, we receive a lot of packages ever day. However, I knew this was coming in and grabbed it before my warehouse folks had a chance to get it. I did mention to the UPS driver about the crunched corner but he said it didn't look like a problem to him. Which I do agree. However I don't know what got jarred inside the unit

I wonder if it's tin whiskers. It certainly sounds highly suspicious of an internal short. I think we need to have careful reporting from members about early and premature failures. I hope I'm wrong, but I have a strong sense we are in for an epidemic of these kinds of stories.

There is no question it's internal. Now when I try to turn it on all I hear is a rellay clicking.on-off..

The troubleshooting advise was to check the impediance settings, which were at 8 ohms..my speakers.

There was no reason for this thing to just BANG and turn off..No storm in the area..no nothing..

I just really hope audioholics take care of me. As I said before the design of the HK 445 is completly different from the 863. It would be a real PITA to have to reinstall the HK. When I do an install, It's above what you would expect..wire tied..exact lengths of cables/wires..tinned wires.. I leave no stone unturned..

My best hopes are to get another receiver within a couple days and replace it before having to send this one back. It would take 4 days to send it back and then 4 days to get the new one..man..what to do, what to do..Please help Audioholics..

Man, I'm thinking you may have the same luck i have.....if it weren't for bad luck you wouldn't ave any luck at all. I have been following your Plasma TV thread as I'm in the market for a big flat TV. Thanks for the thread on the TV by the way. I don't have any advice about the amp, but i will comment on the UPS package handling.

I used to work at a polyester resin producing chemical plant. From time to time we would receive Flammable 3 items into the plant in 5 gallon buckets. these buckets would be packaged in a clearly marked cardboard box with a large red Placard stating flammable 3 in big white writing. I have seen the UPS drivers back up the the unloading dock, and toss these things 5 to 10 feet from the back of their trucks onto the dock. With no regard on how they land or if they were damaged. If they will do that to stuff that can possibly blow them up........well i cringe at the thought of what they do with sensitive electronic equipment.

Best of Luck to Ya!

I dont understand why you recieved a red chicklet for this thread, I see nothing wrong with it. I am sure Audioholics will replace your AVR without issue.

Once again, this reminds me why I buy all my stuff from my local dealer.

Thats what i just posted in the tv thread, find a b&m and build a good repore.
DONT accept damaged shipments, refuse them and contact the supplier so a new unit can be shipped, even though there may be nothing wrong with the first one.

Im sure its because of the point made as to where it was purchased, which is irrelavent to his problem. I feel bad for the guy.

The only advantage of a local dealer is bringing the item back yourself. Shipping companies destroy EVERYBODY'S merchandise. And I really feel UPS is the worst for rough handling. I never have a problem with FedEX. Like somebody mentioned before, I receive hazardous chemicals and laboratory glassware everyday. It's amazing that any of it arrives in one piece. The more lables you put on the box, the more likely it will be used as a soccer ball.

I can tell already that this tin wiskering thing is going to spin me into a world of pissed off. This isn't going to aid buying new electronics for sure. I guess I will just stay in the used market.:)

Yeah, I agree with Majorloser, all this stuff gets tossed around, sometimes worse if you are buying from Best Buy or Circuit City. It may get tossed around to a few different areas in the warehouse before it even gets to your hands. All this stuff comes from some shipping company that just wants to get rid of the package and move on.
I have bought almost all of my electronics on line and have had no problems. You got a lemon, and who knows where or when it happened, or even if the thing was built right.

I remember seeing it in the tv thread, before I saw this thread. Could have been something else. Either way, it's gone now.

Hi All,
I don't even know what a red chicklet is..I guess the dots by your name. If that's the case I shouldn't have any. I've only told the truth and not tried to fight with the people who have obviously flogged me.

If this is a forum where one can tell there experiences with a certain product then why has the heading been changed from my original post?

I quoted SAMSUNG people and it got changed to PLASMA..That's fine as far as I'm concerned, however, it makes some threads on here worthless. I'm warning about a specific model and manufacturer and MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE. Nothing more, nothing less.

I guess when you're here on line and noone has a face everyone is capable of interpreting (sp) things any way they want.

If anyone took the purchase from Audioholics as a problem...I'm sorry. Audioholics did NOTHING wrong! They gave me a great price and they never had my Yamaha in their possession. I'm not placing blame on anyone! However, I'm the one whom is out of a HT this weekend and most problbly all of next week. I just hope Audioholics will get me a working unit (overnight) if possible..

Sorry for any confussion,
Todd
