Yamaha RX-V663 (2) sub outs vs Onkyo 606's (1)

New to the forum, great information. I'm going to order a new reciever soon and have it narrowed down to either an Onkyo tx-sr 606 / 706 or a Yamaha rx-v663 / rx-v863. My question is: the Yamaha's have (2) subwoofer outputs if I want to use (2) subs is the Yamaha's better for that purpose? Is there any reason why I couldn't use (2) subs with the onkyo's? I'm leaning toward a SVS PB12-NSD.

Welcome to the forum!

As far as I know, the only real benefit to the two subwoofer outputs on the Yamahas is that you don't need to use an external RCA splitter to run two subs straight from the receiver. So, no big deal, as those splitters only cost a couple of bucks.

Also, SVS - a fine choice. I'm really happy with mine.

The 663 isnt a .2 its a .1 in wired. So adams comment about a y splitter really holds true with this one. You also could look into an external crossover which would allow for prescise mulitple sub intergration.

Adam wouldn't steer you wrong. He is right. I bought the 663 (very glad I did) but the dual subwoofer-out is just a gimmick. If you like the onkyo better than don't let the dual subwoofer bit sway your decision. It's easily remedied.

Y cables are cheap. However, one thing to keep in mind is the Yamaha 663 has preouts where the Onkyo does not. I just did a quick review of the 606. I felt Audyssey was better than YPAO and the Onkyo seemed to have more power under the hood. My only real concern with the Onkyo is their reliability has been a little shaky vs. Yamaha who have been more solid.

At this point in time I would go with the Yamaha just because of the technical issues associated with the newer Onkyos....The 663 is a smokin unit..

I love my 663... not sure about the dual sub outs and how much of a difference those would make, but a Y cable is just as good of an option. I may test out the dual sub outputs on mine today since I just got some Def Tech BP7006 towers to replace my BP8s, and my sub out of comission right now, so I'll have a chance to use the LFE inputs on the towers.

No particular reason other then I have stop comparing. It took me a month to narrow my choices down to two brands and 4 receivers.

Not to start it all up again, but, the 1018 is a killer unit for what is offered. The upscaling chip is a definite plus...Still, I love my 663!

I think that the rx v663 have the same amp section of his big brother rx v863 and this only delivers 77 watts 1 channel driven and 45 watts 5 channels driven (8 ohms):And the onkyo 605 produce double the power 144 watts 1 channel driven and 85 watts with 5, so if your speakers are not very sensitive this can be important, if you are going to use and external amp not so much but if you read carefully in almost all aspects the onkyo was better than the yamaha, if this audible I don't know but the info if here if you want to look:

Its better to run a external crossover like the dcx2496, to split the signal and dial it in. The yamaha isnt a true .2 so the crossover is virtual for 1 sub not two. So for intergration with the room, the external would be better.

and you will see that the same reviewer was getting much higher power output from the 661 than the 863. HT mag also tested the 863 and got much better numbers. You can also compare the numbers with the Onkyo 606 and see that while it produced better ACD numbers, its 1, 2 ch numbers are much lower than that of the 661 (by S&V) and the 863 (By HTM). I find all these lab measurements by S&V, HTM confusing and frustrating. The Audioholics and HomeCinemaChoice reviews seem far more consistent.

Nope. The 663 does not support the subs individually. It treats them as one including the crossover settings. I'm still not sure what Yamaha had in mind with this feature.

I guess they wanted to save people the troube of getting a y splitter for running dual subs, or it's just a marketing gimmick.
