Yamaha Rx-v659 Osd Question

Hi, I bought a Yamaha RX-V659 Receiver/Amp and in the manual it refers to OSD (which I assume means Onscreen Display) - but I do not know what to do to get the OSD function to work. Does it mean that a display will pop up on a connected TV? Or on the front of the V659 (which I tend to doubt). I have connected my IPOD (thru the optional YDS-10) and the V659 recognizes it and I can play, pause and forward to next song. But since I can't figure out how to turn on the OSD function - I don't know what to do. I have the manual and have read the manual on page 101 (and set the code set to 81981 as described in the manual) and have not figured out how to get the OSD to function. Also, the Yamaha logo does not come on the IPOD. Any ideas?

One update - the YAMAHA logo does show up in the IPOD now.

My Yamaha is a couple of years old now so it doesn't have the latest developments. On-screen display on my receiver means to display the setup menus for autocalibration and manual calibration. I have the video output of the receiver connected to a video input of the TV. And of course you have to have the TV on and switched to the receiver input. My screen display comes on when you select menu on the remote. I don't know if this will help much with the I-pod and other newer features but they might function similarly.

How do you currently have it connected to your TV?

YAMAHA Problems

That is a good question. I had a guy from the store where I bought it do the install. So this much I know - when I watch a DVD I have to select HDMI 1. So I thought that to use the OSD function, it would come on the same 'channel' HDMI 1. But that is not the case. I will try to get behind and look at the cables to see how he put the video from the amp to the TV. The TV is a Phillips Plasma 42" flat panel that is mounted on the wall, so my best chance to see the connections is at the back of the amp. In any case, I appreciate any and all help on the matter.

That receiver doesn't have HDMI, so the video is obviously not going thru it.
Chances are, if some one else installed it, there is no connection from the receiver to the TV at all. (yes OSD means "On the tv Screen Display)
In your case it's probably best to leave that portion of it alone, as the HDMI will give the best picture.
If you need to see the OSD thru the television, which is not an absolute necessity, The best way would be to simply connect analog (Red White and Yellow) from the receiver to the TV.
You will not be able to see the OSD overlaid on the screen while watching a DVD, but you will be able to see better whats going on during any manual set-ups.
In reality, even the newer receiver don't lend themselves well to OSD thru HDMI anyway. So don't feel too left out.

If you have an s-video cable just plug it into the monitor out connection and input that into the back of your tv and you should have access to your OSD.

I have RX-V 659 with Ipod connected thr YDS10.
First check if the ipod model u have is compatible with your receiver.
Then it is prerequisit to have all video signals to TV routed through receiver, as Nomo has put it.
IMO it is a must to have OSD for ipod operation, since it gives you flexibility to play content as you wish.

After ensuring above two press "Display" button on the "XM satellite " related buttons on lower part of your remote, only then the OSD will be seen. If your DVR is output is also routed through receiver, you can see the OSD even when u r watching movies.
best luck!

That was my first thought, but I'm not sure if that TV has a S-video connection.

I also have a 659. To use the OSD you must route your component cables through the receiver to your TV set (ironicly I also have the Phillips 42). The 659 has 2 sets of component ins with the out to be routed to your set. To access the OSD you use the OSD button on your remote.

Problem Solved

Good news! Got the OSD to work today - the problem was that I needed to plug into the RCA video in on the side and understand that you need to select SIDE1 on the Philips flat 42 plasma that is part of the system. Thanks for all the help! Even got the 7 channels to work on the Ipod audio through the receiver.

Problem Solved

Thanks to all who gave insight as to how to fix the problem. Basically, once I connected the RCA cable to the side of the Philips TV, we sorted out the problem!
