Yamaha RX-V563 - Someone Help an Old Man :)

My grandson hooked up my Yamaha receiver and everything worked fine. We moved. I cannot get it to work.

I have new Sony Blu-Ray, a Cox Motorola cable box, an Apple TV2 and a Sharp TV with two HDMI and three other thingys to plug into.

I thought when I plugged the HDMI from Blu-Ray and the HDMI from Cox DVR box into Yamaha and the output from Yamaha into a HDMI in Sharp TV I was through. Nothing works.

I'm Tech stupid. The Yamaha book gives examples and I have no clue.

1 - Connecting video Components shows recommended connections and alternative yet the diagrams show HDMI in solid line and Component video in. Do I need both? i thought the HDMI would do it. The same with DVD player, many solid lines.

2 - Before the move the Apple TV volume wouldn't work with any remotes but it did not go through the Yamaha. Should I have used the diagram for CD Player?

3 - I have two front speakers, center, Yamaha sub woofer and two rear speakers. The only time they work now is when listening to the radio and the two fronts don't work at all. I went to auto setup but I lost the microphone somehow in the move. Can you buy one online? Find one in Best Buy that is compatible?

In summary I have a bunch of cables and connectors but all I tried to use was HDMI to Yamaha for DVD and DVR box and the HDMI output from Yamaha to Sharp TV HDMI input. Do I need to hook up all those multi colored video/audio plugins too for DVR and DVD player??????

It goes without saying thank you for any responses ;)

You seem to be having quite a few problems.

  1. HDMI should be all you need for audio and video for all sources with HDMI outputs. You should not need any of the other connections for such sources (other than plugging them in for power, obviously).

However, to get it to work, you have to have the correct input selected, and you have to have various settings properly set (e.g., the HDMI setting discussed on page 70 of the manual must NOT be set to "Other" for you to get the sound from your surround system.

  2. What diagram do you mean?

  3. You have probably accidentally shut off the front speakers. On the front panel of your receiver is a speaker selector button. Make sure you have selected the front speakers to be on; "A" if they are hooked up to the "A" terminals on the back of the receiver.

As for the microphone, you should get the one that goes with your unit, not a different one. You should be able to order one from Yamaha and probably some other places as well.

I strongly suggest a slow and calm reading of your owner's manual for the receiver, and carefully following their instructions for how to set things up.

It is too late to tell you to write down how things are connected before packing it up and moving, though it is a good idea if you are not good at reading the manual.

Of course, asking more questions as needed is fine.
