Yamaha RX-V465 Remote: control DVR?

Hi all!

I am configuring my new receiver, and have a question about using the remote as a 'universal'....

I successfully programmed the remote to operate my cable box/dvr...

My question:

When I programmed my TV remote to control the cable box, the manual had a 'mapping' page that told me which button mapped to what cable button. Is there anything like that for this remote?

I figured out how to (eventually) get to the Cable Guide and the DVR list (using the 'Menu' button)... What I really "need", in order to get back down to one remote, is to figure out (at minimum) which buttons are mapped to the cable 'A' 'B' and 'C' buttons...

TIA!
Kris

If you can afford it, the rfc series from URC would provide easier use for under a Bill.

is that better than a Harmony 880/890 or One?

I was trying to see if I could get what I needed out of this remote... So far, just the A/B/C buttons seem to be "show stopper" for me....

Hi, Kris. I didn't find anything on the web (doesn't mean it's not there), so I'll fall back to suggesting that you keep hitting different buttons until it registers the command that you want or until you run out of buttons. I'm not trying to be sarcastic - that's what I'd do.

It is highly unlikely that any pre-programmed setup codes include commands for the A, B, and C buttons because there are no dedicated buttons on the remote for generic commands like that. In other words, it's obvious that 'play' gets mapped to the play button and guide or menu could be mapped to a 'menu' button but where would you map A, B, and C?

This is a typical problem with pre-programmed remotes. Even with a universal remote it is not always easy to map a command to a button that would be intuitive.

Remotes with an LCD screen that you can label any way you want help with this problem. I use the URC MX-350 and I have the A, B, and C buttons on the LCD screen on the first page of Cable mode.

The universal remote for Kris' TV did map those buttons (at least I took it that way), so there might be some hope that the Yamaha remote will, too.

Urc R50?

I tried hitting all the buttons I could...no luck :(

I don't think I saw a 'learn' function on it either... Shame.... I could have been down to one remote

I am intrigued by this URC... Been glancing at Logitech Harmony--first the 880 then the One... Seem too pricey for me right now...

Anyone play with the URC R50?

There is no requirement of professional programming tied to any warranties on Universal Remote remotes. What they do say is that you need to get the Pro line of remotes from an authorized dealer, and there are no online authorized dealers (I don't believe). So if you get the remote from some unauthorized place and then have issues you may be up the creek.

As for Harmony vs. Universal Remote, the MX-450 coupled with an RF system will smoke Harmony in terms of how powerful it is. The Harmony, conversely will be easier to program, though the MX-450 isn't terribly difficult to manage.

What you should really be interested in, however, is the Digital RF-50 which is the consumer level version of the MX-450.
