Hello Audioholics!

Thank you in advance for any comments and advice!

I have a Yamaha RX-V377 (purchased a few years ago) and would like to pair the AV with a nice set of 5.1 speakers. I dont want to upgrade to a new AV until the day I have my own home and can invest into a proper fitting setup. For the moment this will pass-through 4k and has enough HDMI channels for all my peripherals. Except bluetooth (I have an adapter) and the networking feature, it has all I need.

Yamaha RX-V337 Specs - https://www.fullcompass.com/common/files/20433-YamahaRXV377Specifications.pdf / https://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/rx-v377/specs.html#product-tabs
100w per channel (8ohms, 1kHz, 0.9% THD, 1 ch driven) *
70w per channel (8ohms, 20Hz-20kHz, 0.09% THD, 2 ch driven) **
Dynamic Power/ch (Front L/R, 8/6/4/2 ohms) 110/130/160/180 W ***

Room size W7m L4m H3m - Rough measurements but hopefully works as a guide.

From my research I considered the Q Acoustics 3010i 5.1 but they are 6 ohms so I believe would not be the best fit.

Questions:
* Im curious why they would not add a Hz range here?
** When would this statistic be relevant? If I wanted to run a 2.1 system only?
*** I dont event know where to start here. Does this mean I can safely use speakers that are 6,4 & 2 ohms? Is this relevant if all my speakers are not rated to 8 ohms?

The main purpose of these speakers will be for film use (Action / Thriller / Comedy) as well as some music (D&B, House, RNB, pop).

Budget would be up to £800 GBP or $1'000 USD.

The look can be anything except a cheap veneer. A Single color mat/gloss is fine.

Hopefully this is enough info but if you need any more please feel free to ask. Honestly I have sunk hours looking at speakers and I'm back where I started. Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Dave

I’m not sure if you’re talking about the receiver or the speakers. Regardless, I doubt you will find any issues using 6-ohm speakers. You should avoid 2- or 4-ohm speakers though.

I’d pass on Definitive Technology and Dayton.

They quote the 1kHz spec with just one speaker driven as it makes the wattage figure appear higher. Same reason for the 2ch driven spec, it's more impressive than say the equivalent 5ch driven spec (which would yield lower watts per channel). Dynamic power is to indicate it can respond at lower impedances to an extent, at least briefly. As was said 6 ohm speakers shouldn't be an issue but lower than that I'd also avoid (and keep in mind the speaker impedance rating is nominal, doesn't mean it doesn't spend some significant time at a lower impedance at certain frequencies).

Not sure what your speaker choices overall would be in the UK, especially subwoofers, but generally I'd look to a subwoofer specialist rather than most speaker brands. BK Elec comes to mind for UK subs.

ps You might think about starting with a 2.1 or 3.1 to get higher quality, then save and add later for the surrounds (or if you have a pair of speakers now, they can be used for surrounds in the meantime).

Thanks for the info.

So if I understand correctly...

Ohms - I can pick speakers with 8 or 6 comfortably.

Watts - Most of the speakers I have looked at have given ranges rather than specifics. Should I stay in the higher or lower range? (AV is 100W)

Sub - Go with a separate provider. Noted.

RE Start small and grow - I'll do this when I have a house and can build a system for a purpose. It doesnt make sense to build a system that would be too big/small in the near future.

Wattage ranges don't tell you much, but does matter whether it is a continuous or peak power rating so watch for that. The upper end figure is likely not going to mean much in sound quality terms, probably more an idea of melting point (or deafness or both) in actual use. The sensitivity of the speaker will give you a better idea of power needs (or what your current one can yield). Also consider that it takes a doubling of power to gain merely 3dB spl (sound pressure level); using an spl calculator will give you a better idea of power needs for a given speaker but I wouldn't worry terribly about it and keep in mind that the volume control can help you prevent damage to the speaker (and your ears). Your current avr might be best used with higher rather than lower sensitivity speakers.

You summarized it fairly nicely otherwise. Keep asking questions and do some research....lots of good articles here on Audioholics ffor guidance/setup.

UPDATE - These are my picks so far. Feel free to comment or rate. Its a work in progress and I may not purchase the whole set but instead all but the SUB. You will notice the budget varies as I am considering a semi-permanent setup. I move home more often than most so a set that I can pack up and ship is a big consideration.

Ok, so these are my speaker options. Now to figure out the dB min Range (thanks lovinthehd for the link). Remove the ones that done make the cut and create a data sheet to help me decide. Once I'm down to a handful I'll try go in and have a listen.
