Yamaha RX-V365

The manual for this receiver is just plain awful. I've read it backwards and forwards. Here is my issue. When I'm just watching say the news, I'd rather have the sound play through the TV. No need for 500 watts there. So I need to pass the audio from my HD DVR through the RX-V365 to the Aquos LCD TV. The DVR is connected to the receiver via high quality HDMI. The manual is no help in this endeavor. I've tried tons of settings. Yesterday, I was messing with setting and voila, I swear it did it. I might be hallucinating but I don't think so. After I switched from DVR input to PS3 and back to DVR, it wouldn't do it. I am stumped. I could buy an hdmi splitter, but if there is a way to do it without spending the extra cash, that'd be nice.

Hi rgr8house and welcome to the forum.

What you are attempting to do is likely not possible. In fact if you receiver is passing video when it is off I am very suprised. My Onkyo will not pass video or audio via HDMI when the processor is not powered up.

What I believe you will need to do is use a component (for video) and analog or digital coax to your TV from your DVR for viewing when the receiver is not powered up.

I'm a bit confused. According the owner's manual, the RX-V365 can't play audio from a source connected via HDMI and will always pass the audio on to the TV connected to the HDMI output jack. Therefore, it seems like it will do what you want by default.

I agree with Craig in that the RX-V365 is incapable of passing an HDMI signal when the unit is in standby mode. It must be powered on in order to pass the HDMI signal.

Your best bet with that receiver is to run HDMI directly to the TV for general TV viewing and also run an optical or digital coax to the receiver for times when you want to watch something a bit more demanding or interesting in surround.

Without knowing your DVR model I can't say for sure, but I'm not aware of any DVRs that don't output to both HDMI and digital at the same time.

The drawback, to me a small one, is that you'll need to switch TV inputs depending on your source.

Damn→ I have similar problems..with this manual/hook up.
Real simple-- and maybe repetitive..
my setup-

DVD→HDMI→ TO RCVR.
DVD→ALSO RUNNING COAX SOUND→ TO RCVR
RCVR IS SET TO 'AUTO' to recieve digital.
I NEVER GET ALL 5 SPEAKERS TO LIGHT UP on panel.
JUST 2.. ► so I'm forced to listen in 5ch 'fake' music Enhancer mode.
WTF am I doing wrong? / YAMAHA GUYS. ?

Because the 365 is only a switcher/ pass thru and does not do audio over HDMI. You need the 465 and above.

Here's how I run my 365:
Receiver HDMI out-------> HDMI 1 TV(video)
Receiver optical out-------> optical in TV(audio)
DVR HDMI out-------> Receiver HDMI in
If I want to use TV speakers I just mute the receiver and use the speakers on the display.
As stated. The RX-V365 will not pass audio. Hook you components to the receiver HDMI , but you need to use an optical/coaxial(digital) or RCA(analog) from the receiver to the display to get audio.
