Yamaha RX-V365... HEAT!

Whenever I have the receiver on for 10-15 minutes, the top heats up like crazy... and I mean, HOT! Should I be worried about overheating, or is this normal? I understand the top is vented so that heat can escape, but from past experiences the amount of heat I'm feeling tells me something isn't right. Any suggestions?

Receiver has plenty of ventilation, room temperature roughly 80-83ºF since the AC is never on to save electricity (Texas is one hell of a hot place)...

My 861 runs very cool.
Check the speaker wires on the back for whiskers.

That thing should NOT be generating a great deal of heat within that set-up.
It does sound like something is wrong with it.

How hot is hot?

My 1800 gets pretty warm, but I'm attributing that to the video circuitry, which the 365 is a bit lacking of, more than the amp section.

What are the speakers?

I have this hooked up to Klipsch F-1, C-1 and S-1 speakers. No subwoofer yet (still shipping)... but I can only imagine the heat generated once I hook up my SVS PB12-NSD. Hooked up to my PC through SPDIF fiber optic cable.

I'm assuming it's because the room is hot as hell... my CPU idles at around 41-45ºC even with a Zalman CNPS9500 92mm cooler... it's an E8500 with only 65W. The thermometer in the hallway reads 83-85ºF midday, but it feels a lot hotter in the room due to my "super computer" and the small amount of space.

As for the cables, I'm using monster cable speaker wires for all 5 speakers, they come with preinstalled pins so no "whiskers" to worry about

How hot is hot? Well, I guess you'd have to feel it for yourself eh? Not BURNING hot, could be classified as VERY warm or mildly hot. Something that'd feel VERY good if it was 30 below freezing outside and there's no heater in the room

I had that AVR a while back and don't remember having any issues with it. Sorry wish I could help more.

If your room is hot you should get a fan to cool the amp. Get a 25mm pc fan and hook it up to the PC. Place the fan on top of the receiver, pulling the air out.

The room is really too hot, and by Texas standards it's not even hot yet.

The little that can be done, if you won't be using AC. (Or use the AC, just don't set it cooler than 78-79)
I'd move the PC and the receiver to the lowest shelves, and the PC on the floor, where the coolest air is.
As was mention by Djizasse use a PC fan or two for the receiver.

Use blinds or drapes to block the sun from coming in.
Would it be possible to relocate some of this to a cooler part of the house, or is this your bedroom?

That's probably my plan. I actually have an extra 120mm fan lying around so I could probably hook it up to my computer and let it sit on top of the receiver... why didn't I think of that??

Yeah... not even "hot" for Texas yet. By just sitting in my room doing nothing I'd be dripping sweat the entire time Curtains are down and ALWAYS will be down lol. Only thing keeping me from melting is the ceiling fan, so I got some airflow in the room there. Any hotter and I'd take your advice on the AC.

And yes, this IS my bedroom LOL... there's nowhere else to put all this, not that I'd feel like moving all this anyways (PC tower by itself weighs ~60lb ).

stopped in BB the other day...salesman indicated a lot of the new lightweight Yamahas are being returned (365,465,565 and 665)...complaints of heat and having to run at high volume levels to get average sound. I posted on the subject and still wonder how you can decrease the weight a third and not have some compromises....I have a hunch we will be hearing more negitive things about these units, but hope not as I am a Yamaha fan.....be curious to know how high you have to set the volume control with efficient Klipsch speakers to get enough loudness in average room.

Hey Tom, sound-wise I have no complaints at all with this receiver and my Klipsch speakers. Night time I play it low volume (around -60 to -50dB) and I can still hear everything crystal clear... it's what I love about Klipsch speakers, high quality regardless of volume. Even daytime my volume remains around the -40 range, if I felt like playing loud music it'd be at -30 the most. Receiver shows no signs of stress/hissing until I turn it past 0 - 5dB (max 11dB), and that is of course, without anything playing lol.

As for your statement of BB complaints... I wouldn't be surprised at all if the people who returned the product because of "having to run high volume for good sound" used crap speakers. The heat still hasn't harmed or altered the receiver in any way... I'm just concerned for its lifespan.

I'm still sticking to using the 120mm computer fan for now, and if anything happens I'd still have a warranty from Yamaha
