Don't know about the 2600 but I got a 1600 and love it to death.

I have the 2600 as well, it is an amazing receiver. If it had ilink and could decode SACD, it would be perfect. Sound is much improved over the 2500 which was no slouch either.

The first and most obvious was in the high end. More detailed and cleaner, sibilance almost non existent in most cases. Other things were more subtle but still seemed improved overall. Not sure what to chalk it up to though; better DACS or improved amp section or both. Maybe Gene can enlighten us as to why it might be so. One thing I can tell you for certain is, HDMI and DVD audio decoding in combination with THX select 2 and THX music mode were worth the $300.00 more for the upgrade.

what about the "full analog upconversion" what exactly does that do? how is it different than the 2500's component/s-video/composite "upconversion"

glad to hear you like your 2600. luckily, i can plug directly into a HDMI TV set from a HDMI satellite receiver. and, i don't use dvd-audio (seems like a dying format anyway. along with SACD, DVDA just never seems to get a hold in the market; the choice of titles for both formats is extremely limited). having paid less than $800 for a 2500 from an auth dealer and not needing the HDMI features you refer to, i can safely say that slightly improved high ends is not worth an extra $500+ to me. i was thinking you were going to say that the 2600 was a night/day improvement over the 2500.

Basically any analog video input is up-converted and sent out via HDMI, useful to those that may have a laser disk, SVHS or large VHS collection.

gcmarshall: If you don't need HDMI and don't want DVD-A then your are correct, It would not make sense to upgrade. The 2600 sounds better in more areas than just high end, but I did not have both receivers at the same time to make a fair comparison. The better high end really struck me from the very first time I listened to it. Yamaha made a major improvement there. I suspect that it is the better DACS that I am hearing.

thanks jeff

so the quality is not really UPconverted? (just converted to HDMI output)

Analogue sources (like your composite or s-video VHS output) can be upconverted to 720p or 1080i out the HDMI output. This is actually quite profound at present for a receiver that costs less than $1500.

It's amazing receiver in video processing & I feel so great about this 2600 receiver as of today ! I've been using the FTA satellite receiver coolsat which can receive all the channels out there. It only have S-video & composite out put. So I connect it to 2600 s-video input, and send output out hdmi-dvi cable to my current hdtv sony 65" 03 model ! Bang I couln't believe what I've seen on the screen. The crappy regular tivi broadcasting resolution from the satellite never look so clean on my tivi now turn all in HD quality level at 1080i like a magic touch !!! All ppv, sport, movie... hundered of channels you name it now turn into HD. "wow" that what you call a AV receiver !!! I'm guessing by next yr all the left behind competitor name receivers will begin to push the pedal to catch the rx-v2600 really hard :)

The 2600 rocks!

I picked up the 2600 the first day it was available at Sound Advice. I am running it to a Panasonic TH-42PHD8UK with the HDMI card using a 7m SonicWave cable. I am using the Xbox 360 as a media center extender hooked into the 2600 by component video, and i have been thrilled with the performance of the system. The 2600 also switches from the Xbox to digital cable because Media Center does not yet support digital cable. The amp is driving a 5.1 Aperion audio speaker system. I am not an expert on home theater, but I have been blown away by 2600.

so Clint, the UPconversion doesn't help my DVD player with component out?
e.g. (i have a tv with hdmi in, if I get the 2600 with HDMI out, but the player doesn't have HDMI, so I connect it to the 2600 using component cables ... does the 2600 upconvert the video quality?)

I think it should do all the conversion as show in the manual ! I don't see any problem there.

Yes, the receiver can take 480p (or 480i) from your DVD player over component video and upscale it to 720p or 1080i over the HDMI connection to your TV.

While the upconversion feature is helpful in smoothing out a lower resolution signal, it cannot create resolution from nothing. Thus, most users will be better off with an HD cable or satellite box with a component video or HDMI (480p, 720p, or 1080i) connection to the receiver instead of the S-Video (480i) connection described by one of the posters above.

Does anyone know if the new Denon AVR-4306 upscales to 720p etc. via the HDMI monitor out like the Yamaha 2600 does?

is the 4600 cheaper or more expensive than the 2600 over there?

because, the 2600 and 1600 just appeared on our local yamaha website (no price yet)
but the 4600 costs big bucks!
