Hello everyone,
I want to add the last piece to my HT system. Speakers: Paradigm Mon. 7 V.4 fronts, CC-350, mini's for rears, PS-1000 sub, B&K REF 7250 amp(200x5). All cobalt interconnects. My preamp is where I need help. I have it narrowed down to the Yamaha rx v2600 and 4600. Or, I was going to go with a seperate preamp Outlaw 990. My price range , as you can see is limited to around $1000-1200. Can anybody help me nail this thing down? What are the major differences between the two Yamaha's. Any input would be fantastic even if your suggestion is something different than the preamps/receivers I have listed. Thanks guys.

If it were my money, I'd go with the Yamaha RX-V4600.
If my amp had balanced inputs, I'd go with the Outlaw 990.
This is just my opinion!

Hello SURVEYOR,
The amp does not have balanced inputs. Will the sound quality be better with a seperate preamp or is the processing capabilities of the 4600 more than adequate for the equiptment I have listed above? Thanks again for taking the time to help me.

I don't think a seperate preamp would be any better. Both those recievers have stupendous sound and processing capabilities, IMO.
The staff at this site and many of the educated readers here can probably provide further and more indepth feedback.
I don't belive that the Yamaha's will dissapoint you!

Again I thankyou SURVEYOR. You absolutely have helped me immensely. I guess at my price budget I would not hear a big difference using a seperate preamp compared to a good receiver.

I am curious if there is a difference between the preamp section of the Yamaha 4600 and the 2500. I am more interested in the preamp section of theae receivers since I already have a seperate amp. Does it make sense to save the money and go with the 2500 instead of the 4600?

.....JaySwizz, many here, have said match a pre-pro with the options, (inputs, outputs, processing abilities), it can handle and accomplish....I think this would especially hold true when the amp sections of the receiver are to power less, or no, channels......

I have search high and low for any info that would give me good justification for buying the Yamaha 4600 over the 2600/2500 receivers. I realize Gene's test contained on this web site indicated better performance for the 4600 running 4 ohm loads. However, for those of us running more modest 8 ohm speakers, I cannot find ANY info to indicate the 4600 is "beefier" for an extra several hundred dollars. Nobody at my local HiFi Buys (Tweeter) can say why the 4600 is so much more expensive. I would love to buy the 4600 because when I am in the market to replace broken equipment (as I am now), I like to buy nice, higher-end things. However, with the 2500 selling in the $700-$800 range at authorized dealers, I am having real trouble talking myself into nearly $1,800 for the 4600?

Can ANYONE tell me (NOT including connectivity features) why one would pay up for the 4600? Gene, Bueller, anyone???

Hello gcmarshall, I to am going through the exact same problem. Do I go with the 4600 or 2500? I seem to be leaning towards the 2500/2600 unless someone can tell me that the processing capabilities are much better on the 4600 as opposed to the 2500/2600.

My local tweeters mentioned they may be pulling the 4600 off their shelves when the 2600 arrives. They mentioned that when i returned the 4600, not when i bought it initially. turds.
I'd get the 2600. The 4600 doesn't output (upconvert/switch) component out through HDMI. The 4600 sounded great tho, no complaints there.

Hi All
No one has had the opportunity to get a look inside the 2600.
Very high quality components were used on the 4600's pre amp section
And we don’t know if this will be replicated on the 2600.
I am sure the 2600 will be stellar, but it would be a guess to say that it will match the sonic capabilities of the 4600 at this point.

I recently purchased an outlaw 990 which replaced my yamaha rx v1000.
Looking at the capability of the 2600, I am considering sending my 990 back and getting a 2600 for my preamp.
