Can anyone tell me how to get my subwoofer to work when playing music? I've got the sub connected to LFE and it works great when watching a movie but I can't figure out how to get it to work when listening to music.

thanks!

In the setup function of your 1500 there will bass management options. I am not familiar with the Yamaha so I can't get more specific. I can say that if you set your mains to "small" (which is want anyway most of the time anyway) most receivers IME will direct the bass to the sub regardless of other settings.

thanks I will try that. I know my mains are set as large. They're big klipschorns so I figured they should be set as large. Will setting them to small change their sound at all?

The only way to use the sub in "Pure Direct" mode of the Yamaha receiver is to connect it to the Front L and R preouts using a Y splitter cable. You will need a Y cable of the type - 2 RCA male to 1 RCA female. The male ends go to the preouts on the receiver and the subwoofer cable goes to the female end of the Y splitter.

A note of caution: The pre-outs will not have bass management in "Pure Direct" mode. So in this mode you will need to use the crossover built into the subwoofer amp. But when watching movies you will need to disable the subwoofer crossover since the receiver will do bass management.

To piggy back on Agarwalro's post I suggest not using "pure direct" or "direct" until you have the "regular" bass management setup complete with sub working with music. It will muddy the waters. I personally have all my speakers set to small and the sub crossovered at 80z. That is pretty much the industry wide standard. IMO start there. 80Hz crossover is in fact the THX standard as well.

After you have the basic set than you can tinker to find out if there are settings that are more pleaseing to your ears. I would suggest that most of the time that setting all speakers small and crossing over at 80Hz works best in the majority of system.

I second that.

Nobody seems to have noticed that d0n's main speakers are KLIPSCHORN's - very efficent speakers with 15" woofers. Movie sound effects can go quite low, but for music, a sub is pretty much redundent, because there's not much music below 35hz or so - the low note of a 4 string bass guitar is 41.3 Hz.

Klipschorn specs
FREQUENCY RESPONSE: 33Hz-17kHz± 4dB
POWER HANDLING: 100 w max continuous (400 w peak)
SENSITIVITY: 105dB @ 1watt/1meter
MAXIMUM ACOUSTIC OUTPUT: 121dB SPL
NOMINAL IMPEDANCE: 8 ohms

I have noticed the same problem with my surround setup; it's true the system works best with mains set to small. One could also set the mains to large and bass output set for "Both" but a little trimming on the X-over is in order and some minor level adustment for the Sub. Playing around a little doesn't seem to hurt anything. However, the OSD for tweaking is a little sloppy for this unit. Try setting the Mains to Large, the bass output to Both (Sub & Mains) knock down the X-over to 60Hz and slim the LFE to -2.0dB and see if you like the result. Now my Loudspeakers are all custom designed and built, as well as the Sub, so I can't make an accurate comparison to your Klipsch Spkrs. I used the YPAO mic on auto setup and then did the tweaks, let me know if this helps.
