Its a phono stage meaning its equipped with gain and apply the RCIAA correction . It cant handle MM cartridges. I own one.

gotcha, yeah it's pretty rare that an AVR , if equipped with a phono stage can handle a low output moving coil, perhaps some of the high output MC's but for the most part they only have sufficient gain for moving magnet/iron cartridges.
