Hello to everyone. I will try to keep this short and to the point. I am looking to get a new AVR and am stuck between the RX-A 2000 or theTX-NR809. I own the Yamaha RX-V667 and I love it but I want something a little higher up the food chain. I have never owned an ONKYO product and was wondering which receiver was a more reliable choice as the ONKYO is a little cheaper but I have heard that ONKYO has some reliability issues (not sure), but Audioholics rated the ONKYO very highly. Does anyone have any advise on this? I would hate to make a poor choice on something so expensive. Thanks

If reliability is a concern, get the Yamaha. Yamaha is the envy of the electronics industry in terms of QC and reliability. In terms of sound quaility, they are equal.

The sound will come down to the room correction. I believe the 2000's YPAO will EQ the sub so the usual advantage of Audyssey in this regard is nullified. I personally prefer Audyssey's low-level listening to Yamaha's Adaptive DRC so I would go with the Onkyo. I agree with 3am though that Yammies are typically very reliable.

Thanks!

Thanks for the quick response! I was leaning more towards the YAMAHA initially just because I like the 667 that I have, but the ONKYO is a lot cheaper (not counting the 500 dollar gift card for the yamaha from new egg with purchase) and the ONKYO seems to be a phenominal piece of equipment from a spec standpoint. A friend of mine told me that he had a bad experience with an ONKYO overheating and dying just outside of the warranty period, although he said it was a great AVR when it was working properly. I still have 2 more months until im making the purchase so maybe the YAMAHA will come down in price a little and help make the choice a little easier. So is there any truth in the whole ONKYO overheating and poor QC that I have been hearing about or are they about the same as most other well known companies out there? Thanks again for your assistance!::D

I just had to make the decision between Onkyo or Yamaha. I went with Yamaha for their reliability and the fact that I have seen a lot of people saying their Onkyo's would constantly overheat. I went to Best Buy and put my hand on top of all the receivers and the Onkyo's were noticeably hotter than everything else. One was so hot that I couldn't even keep my hand on it for more than 2 seconds. I was actually surprised it was still running.

I'm an Onkyo guy, and I'm in the process of shopping around for a new AVR since my Onk is 10 years old and only useable asa pre-pro now. I haven't even looked at a new Onkyo, only Denon and Yami. Haven't heard anything good about the quality of the new Onkyo's. I am really leaning towards the RX-A3010.

I too had a bad Onkyo TX-SR805 HD HDM that had to be sent back for repairs
several times while in warranty and the 3rd and last time just after warranty expired I sold it for parts to another 805 owner. Super Happy with my Yamaha
RX-V1900 HD HDMI AVR as it runs much cooler and now I have added a fan in the rear of my cabinet just to make sure these HDMI parts don't fry. I have a 2003 Yamaha RX-V2400 7.1 AVR (no HD or HDMI) that still plays great. If it had HDMI and HD I would not have purchased a Onkyo that everyone raved about back in 2008. I was going the buy a A2000 or 3000 but got a smokin deal on the 1900 with warranty from best Buy. I will never buy a AVR again online. If it has problems Best Buy up the street can deal with the factory and if it ruined you get full store credit and pick out a newer model like I did when my Plasma TV quit while still in warranty and Samsung said it cost too much to repair. No shipping, repair man came out picked it up and added a few dollars and got a LCD that was a bigger screen..

Why do you want something higher up? If you want to actually improve your sound, you should probably be replacing speakers, not the receiver. Most people put far too much of their money into their electronics and far too little into their speakers, if actual sound quality is the goal.
