My mother-in-law was visiting yesterday and said she'd like to have "surround sound" to go with her new plasma. She's in her sixties and I didn't think she really understood what "surround sound" really is. So, after I explained it to her, she said she only wanted two speakers.

I told her that I'd give her a pair of Mordaunt-Short 902i's that I don't use any more, but she'd have to get a stereo receiver. Knowing that she won't want to spend a lot on it, a quick search brought me to the RS300. She won't be cranking it, so I figured that this would do the trick, for about $300.

Any opinions on this receiver?

Specs from Yamaha's website:

Minimum RMS Output Power (8 ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz) 50 W + 50 W (0.04% THD)

Dynamic Power/Channel (8/6/4/2 ohms) 70/77/89/100 W

Not impressive, but I figure it'll satisfy her needs. If anyone knows of a better alternative in that price range, please let me know...

I'm using the slightly larger RS700 to drive my Sierra's with no problems at all...:).

Thanks for the suggestion, but they won't ship outside the US.

Onkyo.ca links to shoponkyo, so I think they ship to Canada, although I tried reading the fine print and didn't see anything difinitive. If you're ok with recertified you could pick this up :
The 8255 is 50 w/ch - http://www.shoponkyo.com/detail.cfm?productid=TX-8255&modelid=9&group_id=1&detail=1&ext_war=1

It's $139 usd or if you join the club is $99 usd.

Their avrs are known for getting hot, and lately I've read people are starting to have problems with them as they age. Not sure if the 2 channel models suffer from the same issues....
