Hey, I'm new to the whole audioholics thing, because i didn't even know about good speakers until last week. i was convinced by ads and demo setups, that bose was the best speaker company, but then last week i went to a local ovation store and listened to a pair of magnepan mggs and was amazed that they sounded 100x better than any bose speakers i've ever heard. i plan on buying them in a week or two but realized i needed a new amp. i dug around my dads old audio equipment and came across a yamaha m-40 amp with a c-40 preamp. It handles 4 ohms and is 250watts per channel at 8 ohms.

is this a good enough set up for a pair of mgg's if so how good.
and the amp is from 1984, but a friend of mine said an analog amp never goes bad.

thanks for your help.:D

I remember the m-40 from back in the 80's, sort of. Forgot about them until I googled the picture for this thread. As I recall, this was a killer amp in it's day and is most likely an equally killer amp today unless something is gone wrong with it. I think that you can hook it up to the MMGs and enjoy it with no trouble. It is old though, so it maybe could use some good contact cleaning, etc.
