Folks,
I want to install ceiling lighting in my living room on the same circuit as my Yamaha Receiver. Since it is a 15A circuit I want to make sure that I do not overload the circuit by adding more lights.
So, I would like to know what is the theoretical max power will the avr draw? E.g. Worst case scenario I were to use 7.1 in Zone 1 and 2 Sp in Zone 2 at the same time. If you could provide me how to do the calculation, it would be nice.
Thanks for your help.
Yamaha is one company that sometimes provide two consumption figures, one just called power consumption while the other they referred to as maximum power consumption. For the model you are asking about, they only provided the power consumption figure and that is 400W/500VA. To calculate current you need to use the VA figure and use the forumla:
Current = Power in VA/Voltage, or in this case, current = 500/120= 4.17A. Sometimes manufacturers do not provide the VA rating but just the W (Watt). In that case you have to assume a power factor of approx. 0.8. So then in this case current = Power in Watts/(VoltageXp.f.), or current = 400/(120X0.8) = 4.17A.
This calculated value is meaningless to a certain extent as Rick has already explained, but it does offer you some kind of ball park number. Also, this is likely the power rating that Yamaha had to put at the back of the unit to get UL, CSA, etc. approvals, so it is probably okay to size your circuit base on such calculated value. When doing such loading calculations you typically do not have to worry about the peak values.
