My system works fine with RCA cables but I want to switch to Component cables (& eventually HDMI) - when I hook up the component cables I lose my picture & sound. Are there setting adjustments I need to make to have the AV Receiver understand that I have switched to component cables?

We might need a little more info here. I "THINK" that receiver will only output a component signal for component input signals. In other words, you have to have a device connected via component for the receiver to pass the component signal on.

Can you tell us what devices you are hooking up to the receiver and how? I assume you are connecting the receiver to the display via component as well?

If you're devices support HDMI, Why would wait to do that? You can find inexpensive HDMI cables from here and here.

If your devices don't support HDMI, then you'll have to use component to your receiver and then to your TV. Your receiver doesn't upscale to allow all video to be passed via HDMI.

I've found that sometimes its easier with some entry/mid level receivers to bypass the video sections of the receiver (non HDMI) and just connect directly to the display.

Also, make sure you've got the TV and receiver set on the right "input".

I've got HDMI into my TV from my HTR-6230 Receiver.
I use HDMI from my PS3 into the Receiver.
I use (currently) RCA cables from my TV Satellite into the Receiver.
I intend to get HDMI to run from the Satellite to the Receiver - I just don't have it yet. I do have component cable that I expect would improve my picture quality in the meantime. I experimented earlier by taking the PS3 HDMI and using it between the Satellite & Receiver and had no luck with it either. This is why I am wondering if I need to make setting changes on my Receiver.

Are you positive you have the receiver on the right input? (HDMI 1 or whatever it is)

1) Did you set your satellite box to output the video signal via HDMI or component? You've only been using the yellow (video) rca connection so the satellite box has had no reason to send a signal out any of the HD connections.

2) Component only carries video. No audio. That is a separate connection and is either coaxial or optical.

3) HDMI and component will show no difference in picture quality. They both can carry all signal formats. No matter what signal your TV receives, it is still changing the picture to it's native display format (unless the signal received is in the native display format).
