I Have a yamaha HTR-6060 receiver, and I'm thinking about purchasing a blu-ray player. I know that blu-ray players contain Dolby True HD decoders, but is the receiver required to have one as well to take full advantage of this format?

Welcome to the forum!

You only need one of them to be able to decode the surround sound, but if you do that in the blu-ray player, then you do need to be able to pass the audio from the player to the receiver. I mention that because not all receivers have the proper connections or processing to handle that. You could do that with either HDMI or multi-channel analog audio connections.

Your receiver can process audio over HDMI, so you are all set. You would need to set up the audio output in the blu-ray player correctly (to PCM or LPCM, I think). If you told us which player it was, we could help you with any questions on that.

The Panny BD55 or Sony S550 both have full decoding capability and would do just fine.

The BD35 will not decode all formats into PCM which means you won't get some or all HD sound. You can do either a 6160/BD35 or 6060/BD55 combination.

The BD35 definitely will decode all HD formats and output them as multichannel as PCM over HDMI.

Now the problem is that it's discontinued and might be hard to find until the replacement model comes out!

This is correct. My bad.
