Yamaha HTR-5960...getting surround to work..

Hey all!

I just picked up an HTR-5960 over the weekend, and have a Polk Audio RM6750 system for the speakers (it's a 5.1 setup, might go to 7.1 eventually). Either way, the HTR has A and B setups for the front two speakers. Right now, I have the left and right front speakers in the A setup, and the left/right inputs from the subwoofer going into the B setup. Center channel is plugged in and working properly. Lastly, I have the two rear speakers in the surround sound section (rear) of inputs for the receiver. Everything seems to be hooked up properly. However, the situation I'm getting right now is that I'm either getting the system to only have sound coming out of the left, right, and subwoofers (A + B) or if it's a different mode, it'll only come out of the center channel speaker.

Obviously I'm missing something, but I'm not able to get sound out of all the speakers at once. It's either 3 speakers or 1 depending on the mode. Do I have to run the auto setup on it? Is there something I'm missing? I can't find anything in the owner's manual, so I'm definitely ignorant on the subject.

Thanks for the help. :)

You cannot run A+B simultaneous and have your surrounds work, it won't allow it. Also make sure the surrounds are set to something other than none in the setup menu. What kind of subwoofer do you have?

Hey! Thanks for the quick reply. I do appreciate it!

Same subwoofer that's in the RM6750 system.

Pretty sure it's this:

My previous receiver, I had the subs ins going into the left and right channel speakers. Should I do the same setup to avoid putting them into the B setup?

Also, where is the setup for the receiver? I haven't been able to find it. Is it just where it says the levels of each individual speaker? Most likely not. I'm such a newbie with this stuff!

Just need to know where I should put the subwoofer inputs to the receiver, as well as how to get the rear speakers on.

Thanks again!

You should use a single cable from the receiver's sub pre-out jack to the Left line-level input on the sub. All of the other speakers are connected directly to the receiver with the front speakers being connected to the A terminals.

Then go into the setup menu of the receiver and set sub=yes/on and the same for all the other speakers. The manual for the receiver will explain how to access the setup menus.

Here is the manual for the Polk speaker system which also shows the hookup options: http://www.polkaudio.com/downloads/manuals/home/RM6750_Manual.pdf Page 6, Option 1 is what you want to use.

Are there cables that will take the 2 positive/2 negative wires for left/right channel from the sub into the single pre-out jack of the sub? If so, I'll need to pick one up.

*EDIT* Nevermind! I think there is an RCA line in for it. I'm at work, but I'll just pick up a 2-1. I appreciate the guidance everyone. Will keep ya'll posted! Thanks again...

That will be a much better connection than before, good luck.:)

Worked great, fellas! Thanks!

Picked up a stereo RCA cable and a Y adapter for the sub. Then, removed the sub wires from the B inputs. After that, took the surround, and made sure they were in the correct spot (they were in the surround, but not the first set). After that, ran auto setup, and then threw it in 7 channel mode, and it is working awesome. Very clean sound.

Thanks again. :)

I have the yamaha HTR 5960 with a Klipsch sub and center speaker. I have 3 sets connected to the A output and suround. Can't get the surround to work. Everything test okay. But can't hear surround when watching movies. Have the output of my Samsung tie to the Yamaha. Plenty of power.

Can you describe your connections again. From what I've read, it appears like you have center, left/right mains all tied to the "A" output. Do you also have surround speakers? Did you read the manual? If not, please do. AVR's aren't trivial like stereo systems with many more connections involved.

Your Yamaha will blow away Bose. It appears that the speaker connections are correct. Have you plugged in the mic and run your room correction softwater yet?
