Yamaha HTR-5890 FM reception problem

I just got the Yamaha HTR - 5890 and I am really happy with the amp. My problem is that the FM reception at my place is really crappy and so when I try to do the automatic tuning, it records every second frequency and puts it on the memory bank. So I get almost all junk and some (4-5) actual stations out of the 48 memory locations. The actual stations that are put in the memory are crystal clear and sound great. I tried changing orientation, location etc. of the FM antenna that came with the amp, but the situation does not improve too much.

Anybody know how to fix this. The manual claims it will only record actual stations, but that is not the case for me. :( Is there a problem with the FM section of the amp

I was thinking of getting an amplified FM antenna from Radioshack, if it will help?

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I saw the post [THREAD]11764[/THREAD]

Is there a problem with the FM section of the amp or do I need a better antenna?

Come on guys, something?

I'd look at another antenna, perhaps a directional one.

It sounds like the tuner is reacting to reflected ("ghost") signals and seeing them as another station. If, by using a directionals antenna, you can minimize the "ghosts" and have only the real ones hit the tuner you might get rid of them.

An amplifier will only make the problem worse by amplifying hte ghosts.

Also, some very weak stations may get locked in as well. Autotuning is kinds indiscriminate about what it chooses.

Thanks for the advise

I think the only option is to manually go through the whole sprectrum and individually set stations into the memory. Not too bad an option, just laborious. Oh well, everything so far has been smooth sailing with regards to my HT, something had to act up :)

Cheers.

Perhaps your radio has a feature to seek only local, stron stations? Some car radios have that feature so it doesn't pull in weak signals, hence your problems, besides the ghosting mentioned above as well.
You also have an antenna problem. The one that came with the unit is very poor for weak, distant stations. Can you install a directional antenna, or a multi directional one from Radio Shack?
Amplified antenna may have a drawback unless it has an amp right on top of the antenna.

FM Reception in new receivers

I have had a lot of experience with many brands of receivers. None of the new receivers has even a decent FM tuner. In all probability your problem is not antenna related. The problem is called fundamental overload of the front end. At my place I have to use a very old Yamaha receiver (stereo) to listen to FM. I have a station just seven miles from home and I only listen that station in the new receivers. A more "powerful" antenna just makes the situation worse. Try a normal rabbit ear antenna or the wire antenna supplied with the receiver and purchase an attenuator from radio shack. You will be able to listen to the strong stations with no problem. But forget about slightly weaker stations. Hope this helps.
If anybody knows of a good receiver with a decent tuner I would like to know. I still enjoy listening to FM broadcasts for old fashioned music in Puerto Rico and also to the Government's Educational Station.
