howdy folks. i hope i'm posting this in the right place.

i've got a yamaha htr-5860. today, i noticed i was not getting any sound out of my front left and right speakers. first thing i did was check the wires. granted, i haven't moved anything in the last 6 months. but, no luck there.

i then went into the setup menu and cycled through the speaker levels. i'm getting sound from all my speakers except the front left/right. so, i'm wondering if something could have happened to the output on just those 2 channels. i then took the front left/right and wired them into the rear outputs and got sound. so, i know the speakers work just fine.

has anyone heard of this? any thoughts on if it's worth getting fixed? i'll admit, i have been wanting a new receiver, but the thought of spending $400-600 right now makes my wallet cringe a bit.

any help is appreciated and thanks in advance!

It looks like your two main channels have blown. Did you try pure direct mode while lietening to a CD from the analog outputs of your player if it has any?

that's kind of what i'm thinking as well. i'll give the pure direct mode a shot tomorrow. any thoughts on how much it would cost to get fixed?

otherwise, i guess the hunt begins for a new receiver!

Before you get a new receiver, see if you can get the test tones to come out of the front speakers. Do a complete system reset back to default before taking it in for service.

It is odd that the two front channels went at the same time. These leads me to suspect a software problem and a system reset may well solve your problem.

If there is a problem you can't guess at the cost, but repairs are usually expensive.

Thats what I'm suspecting too. Thats why I suggested using analog outputs from a CD or DVD player and then using pure direct to be able to keep the digital/sw out of the loop.

that's for the suggestions! i didn't even know you could do a system reset. unfortunately, we had a pretty busy weekend, so i didn't get to try 3db's suggestion. i'll give these a shot when i get home from work. I'll report back and let you guys know what happens.

thanks again!

hey guys. it worked! i did a system reset and i've got my front left/right back!

so, you mentioned it might be a software problem. what would cause this to suddenly occur? is there anything that can be done to prevent this from happening again?

thanks again for the help!
