I recently purchased a Yamaha HTR-5790 receiver and configured it with L and R front, center and L and R surround speakers using the YPAO mic and auto config procedure. No subwoofer.

Question: The front panel display on the receiver, when Im first watching video with 5.1 output, shows all five channels as active (L, C, R, SL, SR) plus an LFE channel. Then, the receiver switches modes automatically and shows only the front L and R channels as active. There is audio from all speakers but I don't know if it is simulated 5.1. What am I doing wrong?

When I first set up the receiver, to the TV I had a DVI to HDMI cable and a coaxial digital audio IN. All five channels appeared as active on the receiver panel and the panel also showed mulptiple active DSP fields. Now I have just an HDMI cable (new box) and only the front L and R channels show as active.

Input mode is Auto. EX mode is OFF so as to default to 5.1. Sound is coming from the TV via coaxial digital. The TV audio is set to Stereo. The Comcast cable box is set to audio Pass Through in the system menu and advanced/matrix/no compression in the setup menu. Digital coax audio out to receiver.

Those little lights show the signal that is coming in not what speakers are currently active. Many times a 5.1 program will have commercial breaks that are only 2.0.

Thanks it never shows 5 channels any more -- just two. Not sure why.

Just bought and hooked up a 5790 and have same issue. Also have a subwoofer hooked up that does not seem to be getting the proper bass signal, as it should be rocking my house. I have all the menu's set for 5 speakers and a subwoofer. The input to the receiver is optical digital out from my Panasonic plasma TV into the digital in on the receiver. Could this be cuttingthe signal down to 2 channel (L&R) from 5.1?
Ant help greatly appreciated.

I'll check my receiver tonight to see what it does. What you may think as speakers being used are just inputs that the receiver recognizes as used. I know when playing a DVD that the receiver recognizes Dolby Digital and displays this on the main panel but I can't remeber if all inputs light up. I somehow doubt it. I use the optical link, not the coax which should not matter at all. I'll try and remember tonight to watch for this.

In the meantime, check the settings on your DVD player to ensure that yuou are not down mixing to 2 channel on the coax output. :)

Welcome to the forum!

The TV might be downmixing the two channels. What is the model number of the TV, and what are you trying to listen to through the TV - just the TV, or something hooked up through HDMI?

Make sure that you have your speakers set to "small" in order to check out the sub, and also make sure that you don't have the receiver set to "stereo" mode (so, put it in a surround sound mode).
