I am currently saving up for this receiver! I was origionally going with the 5730, but this one seems to give "more bang for the buck".

I currently have $101 (canadian), and am buying it from Futureshop for $399.

What does everyone think of this receiver? I have read it's manual 50 times over (I like to read manuals alot) and have looked at various (about 4 that i could find alltogether on the 'net) reviews. People seem to generally like this receiver. Does anyone here own this receiver and what do you think of it?

P.s. My birthday is on the 29th. Turning 15! ^_^

thanks,
Trav

I think any of the yamaha recievers are good. I have the htr5760 and it's excellent for the value/price that you get all that for. I'd definately try and get the 5740 rather than the 5730.

An outstanding receiver for a 15 year old. Imagine what you'll own when you're old and gray like me at 35!

Scarecrow - I agree!
Buckeyefan 1 - Yeah, thats why im upgrading....you can ALWAYS upgrade! :)

I have chosen this one and am willing to spend the extra hundred because of:

Dolby Prologic IIx
DTS ES
29 DSP modes
Better layout in my opinion (the buttons for the "input" selector, i didnt like, I like a knob)
6.1CH surround, as opposed to 5.1

couple of questions:

1.Why do we need 7.1 allready? How many DVD's/SACD's/DVDA's out there use 7.1, let alone 6.1?

2. I read in the manual that it seems like you can use more than one sound mode at the same time (for example "Dolby PL IIx: Movie and Dolby PL IIx: Game)

Why would you want to do this and how?

How would you choose your second mode?

7.1 means your receiver has 7 amps. The last amp drives two rear centers. No music or HT has dual center sound. Some receivers have 7 channel stereo, so it works best in that mode.

You can only use one sound mode at a time. The X in PLII allows you to tailor the processing to games, music, or theater.

DTS Neo 6 is better than PLIIX for more dynamic sound. Allows less compression, thus more sound, better bass and highs. It's all processed sound though, and you can tailor your sound with the internal eq.

I see. I was looking through the manual and there is a big table (i cant remember what exactly is in it), but it says something about multi CH inputs and it has the display with 2 sound modes i think, maybe i misread it?

I am wondering what would be the sound mode to match - as closely as possible anyways - theatre sound? I have always noticed that theatre's sounded more crisp. Would DTS be used for this?

The 5740 is a great lower-priced receiver. The only issue is the price... those are running right at $ 210 USD at places like etronics and onecall right now. $ 399 Canadian seems very excessive... The 57xx series is being phased out for the new 58xx series, which has the built-in XM radio capability. That being the case, they should be cutting you a much better deal. :(

DTS can be used for anything. DTS Neo 6 is used to matrix out two channel stereo from tv, cd, or your fm tuner into 6 channel surround sound.

Does anyone know what year this receiver was released by Yamaha?

yes. I read somewhere that those were 2004 models.

I found the HTR-5740 for $190 online. $100 cheaper then best buy wether or not they ship to canada is another story. RX-V450 is the equivilent in the RXV line but seems to be about $20 more expensive.

Nice choice in receivers. I have a rxv650 arriving in a few days myself.

I owned this receiver last year (since upgraded to a Yammie RX-V1500), and I found the HTR-5740 quite adequate. You'll enjoy it. Good choice! :)

Do you still have the receiver? Do you have the manual? If so, can you please explain to me, on page 40, this?

Program:
DTS+Dolby EX.
SUR. Enhanced

Features:
Standard 6.1-channel processing (Dolby Digital EX) for DTS Sources

Sources:
Multi

(it says this in one feild in the table), but how can the surround program be both DTS and Dolby Digital?

This further explains my previous question:

"2. I read in the manual that it seems like you can use more than one sound mode at the same time (for example "Dolby PL IIx: Movie and Dolby PL IIx: Game)

Hi Cygnus. I'm glad you decided on which reciever to go for, but that price is too high for sure like someone has already stated. Futureshop and Best Buy are almost always running specials on these receivers, make sure to wait until they are on sale. What part of canada are you in? If it is southern Ontario I would suggest you go to 2001 Audio Video. The sales staff are damn pushy, useless as tits on a bull, and a little irritating, but they also have a huge margin to play with when it comes to giving discounts. I purchased speakers with a MSRP of $599.00 for $319.00 including tax. In addition 2001 also sells the RX series of yamahas as opposed to the one's futureshop and best buy sell. I don't think that there is a huge difference but the model number you would want is RXV450 instead of the 5740. They have it listed on their website for $429.00, but I'd bet you'd have no trouble getting it for between $325.00 and $375. I'd also be leary of buying online from the states. Even products from authorized dealers usually don't have a warranty valid in Canada. There are companies that make exceptions, but Yamaha isn't one. That plus the extra costs associated with shipping are brutal. For example to buy the Yamaha 5740 form etronics.com would be $209 US. By the time it gets to Canada the total cost will be $368.44 CDN., and now you don't have a warranty.

My suggestion would be to either wait for a sale at Futureshop of Best buy, or give 2001 a shot. Of course you can always just talk to one of the sales people at FS or BB and see what kind of a discount they can give, it may be bigger than you think considering the mark up on reveivers. Stick to your guns and do NOT pay $399.00. Like a great man once said, "Don't take any guff from these swine."

2001 Audio Video would not work as of I am not in Ontario. I do, however agree that $399 is pretty steep. At best buy here, it is $449 though! This is why I opted for FS. I will however try to get a discount. Besiedes, by the time I'm ready to pay for it, the price may hae gone down by then. What are the differences between the HTR and RX series of receivers? They look the same on the outside...so whats the diff?

It's been a while since I sold Yamaha, but I believe the difference is in measured power. The HTR's power is rated at 1khz, like the Sony receivers are. So the HTR power ratings are a little 'juiced'. Also, the HTR series ends with the equvalent of the rxv-750 or 1500 I forget which. But according to the local Yammie rep that's it... they are identical to their RXV kin on the inside.

this is from yamaha usa website:

What Is The Difference Between The RX-V Line And The HTR Line?

There are many similarities between these two product lines. The RX-V line and the HTR line are produced in the same Yamaha factory using the same high quality parts throughout. The RX-V and equivalent HTR models have the same warranty periods, the same manufacturer's suggested retail price, the same features, and the same remote control units.

There is a cosmetic difference found on the front panels of these two lines. The RX-V line maintains the traditional white colored lettering normally found on most Yamaha components, while the HTR line provides a slightly different approach. Yamaha has created a new look by using gold colored lettering in selected areas on the HTR receiver series. However, both the RX-V line and the HTR line feature the same high quality front panel construction.

The amplifiers in the HTR and RX-V units are identical but rated differently to comply with the accepted measurement standards of their respective channels of distribution. Both ratings are FTC approved and are designed to handle the dynamics of today's audio and video sources. The RX-V line has the power amplifiers rated from 20-20000 Hz. The HTR line has the power amplifiers rated at 1000 Hz. Both lines can reproduce the full frequency response of 20-20000 Hz.

The RX-V line is typically sold through Yamaha authorized audio/video specialty retailers, and is not available for mail order sales, phone sales, or internet sales.

The HTR line is sold through mass merchants, catalog retailers, and department stores. You may also purchase the HTR line through the mail, by phone, or at authorized internet retailers.

All transactions must be done through the authorized Yamaha dealer network. Any purchase made from an unauthorized dealer/retailer voids the Yamaha manufacturer's warranty.

are the HTR's newer then the RX's? It seems this way with their explination:

"Yamaha has created a new look by using gold colored lettering in selected areas on the HTR receiver series."

htr is the exact same as rxv, I would suggest a pioneer vsdx1014txk (7.1, thx certified). It has 110watts 20htz-20000mhtz 0.09thd, weighs 34 pounds and can be had at sale time for probably about 600cdn. You wouldn't need to upgrade probably ever. I'm kind of sad I didn't get that one or a yam htr5790. I think it's important to wait and get the best best you possibly can, otherwise later you might be upset that you didn't wait for the better option. 7.1 or 6.1, it's a preference. Good Luck!
